Men’s Track & Field wins third straight TCCC Championship

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The Roger Williams University Men's Track & Field team clinched their third straight Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship Saturday with a dominating performance.

Justin Davis (Ashland, Mass.) won the 400 Meter Dash with a personal best of 51.8, then led the 4 x 400 Meter Relay with Jonathan Ellis (Yonkers, N.Y.), Tim Clarkin (Coventry, R.I.), and Steven Carnevale (Easton, Mass.) to a win and a new school record. Carnevale also set a personal best in the 800 Meter Run, running wire-to-wire for the win in a time 1:59.36.

Clarkin won both the 110 Meter Hurdles in a personal-best and school-record time of 16.72 & the 400 Meter Hurdles with a personal best 59.87. He was also a part of the school record 4 x 100 Meter Relay with Dan Rathbun, Eric Patnode (East Longmeadow, Mass.), and Luis Garcia (Roxbury, Conn.).

Senior Thomas Maybury (East Longmeadow, Mass.) qualified for New England Championship in the Steeplechase for the third consecutive season with a school-record tying time of 10:08. Evan Jones (Lexington, Mass.) battled through injury to win the Triple Jump and placing runner-up in the Long Jump.

At the throws, Emil Pornelos (Hartford, Vt.) put on a dominating performance, taking first place in three events, breaking conference meet records in two of those events and leading the Hawk track team in total points with 30. In the Shot Put, he took top honors with a personal best, conference meet record and New England qualifying throw of 46' 3.5”. He also had a personal best and conference record in the Hammer Throw, finishing first with a heave of 143' 4”. That throw broke the conference meet record set by former Hawk thrower, Matt Callahan, in 2009.  Pornelos then ended the day taking home the Discus championship with his second-best throw ever at 137' 6”.

“Emil had the best meet of his life today and I couldn't be happier for him,” said Throws Coach Tom Conley. “This is the meet you try to get your athletes to peak for and it went without a hitch for him. He showed us today that he's one of the best all-around throwers in New England.”

Emil's brother, Jon Pornelos (White River Junction, Vt.) also had a solid day in the throws, scoring 20 points for the Hawks. The freshman took second place in the Javelin with a toss of 175' 9”, third in the Shot Put at 38' 10.25”, and third in the Discus with a throw of 114'5”.

“As with the women, the men's team was unrelenting all day,” said Head Coach Sean Livingston. “They attacked each event and simply overwhelmed the competition. They are both deserving of the wins. The program has come a long way in three short years and I give all the credit to them and their hard work, determination, and focus. They really came together for this meet and we got a glimpse of what the future holds.”
