BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Men's Tennis team came away with a hard-fought 5-4 win against Eastern Nazarene College Tuesday afternoon.
Eastern Nazarene's Sam McKay-Corkum (Rehoboth, Mass.) and Sam Son (Wilbraham, Mass.) gave the Lions an early 1-0 lead with a 8-2 win against Jeff DeNunzio (Barrington, R.I.) and Taylor Webster (Bristol, Conn.) at #2 doubles. The Hawks would go on to win the next two doubles matches, with Ryan Swanson (West Newbury, Mass.) and Jason Pacino (North Reading, Mass.) defeating Austin Steelman (Darlington, Md.) and Eric Johnson (Kingston, Mass.) 8-5 at #1, followed by a 9-8 (8-6) win by Spencer Withington (Plymouth, Mass.) and Jonathan Chandler at #3.
Son tied the match at two apiece with a 6-2, 6-0 win at #4 singles against Pacino. Webster would tie the match again with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Johnson at #5. DeNunzio then dropped his #1 match against Steelman 6-0, 7-5 to knot the match at three.
Withington came away with a 6-2, 6-3 victory for the Hawks against Tyler Perron at #6 for the crucial fourth point. Yet Brandon Lum (Great Neck, N.Y.) grabbed 6-2, 7-5 win for Eastern Nazarene at #2, setting up the deciding match between Swanson and McKay-Corkum at #3. Swanson won the opener 6-2 before McKay-Corkum took the second set by the same score. Swanson would earn the win for the Hawks with 6-3 win in the third set.
Roger Williams (7-6, 5-2 CCC) hosts Coast Guard on Thursday, while Eastern Nazarene takes on UMass-Boston on Thursday.
