Men’s Lacrosse Opens Season with a Win over Mitchell

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Men's Lacrosse team opened the season with a non-conference win over the Mariners of Mitchell College.  The Hawks outscored their opponent 19-4.  Jon Nessa (Concord, Mass.) led the Hawks in goals while Mike Hanna (Somers, Conn.) and Nick Gagnon (Milton, Mass.) tied for the lead in assists.  This was also the first contest for Mariners whose record slides to 0-1.

The opening period began with each team trying to find their offensive rhythm. The Hawks opened the scoring in the last third of the first period when Hanna found an open John Lisitano (Guilford, Conn.) who netted the first goal with 4:22 left in the period.  Eric Valenti (North Reading, Mass.), Will Siefert (Duxbury, Mass.), and Hanna each recorded a goal in the next three minutes to put the Hawks up 4-0 at the end of the first period.

Nessa came to life in the next period with three goals while teammates Cameron Signorelli (Albany, N.Y.), Tim Kelly (Ridgefield, Conn.), and Hanna also found the net before half.  The Mariners got their first score of the season with 7:30 remaining in the half when Aaron Sladyk (South Windsor, Conn.) fed David Klapp (Greenfield, N.Y.) for a winner.  The Hawks took a 10-1 lead into halftime.

Hawks continued to dominate in the third period finding the net six more times while keeping the Mariners scoreless in the quarter.   Patrick Connolly (Wantagh, N.Y.) and Kevin Nash (Scituate, Mass.) tallied their first goals of the season at 9:58 and 1:19 respectively.

The final period was the most productive quarter for the Mariners.  Demetre Lyras (Rocky Point, N.Y.) scored twice and assisted Dan DiGioia (Glen Ridge, N.J.) for his first of the season.  The Hawks matched the goal total with thee of their own to bring the final score to 19-4.

Alan Williams (Bristol, R.I.) led the Hawks with six groundball and gained possession in 8 of his 11 face-offs.  JD LeMay (Lagrangeville, N.Y.) had 15 saves in the loss while Luke Aubrey (Norwalk, Conn.) stopped 3 shots in the win.  Conner Carroll (Madison, Conn.) saved 2 shots in the third and Jake Cioffi (St. Albans, Vt.) and Jay Pourbaix (Walpole, Mass.) finished out the game in goal for the Hawks.

The Hawks return to action Saturday, March 1st at 1:00 p.m. in New London, Conn. to take on the Camels of Connecticut College.  The Mariners return home to take on Anna Maria on Saturday, March 1st at 1:00 p.m. as well.
