Men's Lacrosse comes up short in final seconds at Connecticut College

Box Score NEW LONDON, CONN.—Tyler Hegarty (Setauket, N.Y.) scored his second goal with 2:40 remaining in regulation and that proved to be the difference as Connecticut College (1-0) held off a resilient Roger Williams University (1-1) squad to pull out a 10-9 victory in its season opener Saturday.

Briggs Barton (Rye, N.Y.) contributed two goals and two assists for the winning side. Kevin Dachille (Garden City, N.Y.) scored twice. Junior Derek Bertolini (Madison, Conn.) sandwiched a goal around two assists in his debut for the Camels.

James Messina (West Islip, N.Y.) accounted for three caused turnovers. Sophomore Bobby Bleistein (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) made 11 saves in the cage for the Camels.

John Hazard (South Setauket, N.Y.) finished with a team-best five ground balls, winning 10-of-20 of his battles at the x.

Roger Williams senior attackman Jon Nessa (Carlisle, Mass.) had a hat-trick with three goals for the Hawks. Sophomore Caleb Kenney (Portland, Maine) chipped in with two goals and an assist for RWU. John Ricciardi (Duxbury, Mass.) and Tim Kelly (Ridgefield, Conn.) both contributed with a goal and an assist for the visitors.

Luke Aubrey (Norwalk, Conn.) had 10 saves in the setback.

The Camels carried a 4-3 lead after one quarter of action and were clinging to a 6-5 lead at the intermission.

With 1:49 remaining in the third, Connecticut College broke the fourth tie of the game when Dachille took a feed from Barton and buried a shot from the top of the box.

But the Hawks rebounded and on the ensuing face-off, Alan Williams (Bristol, R.I.) assisted Nessa for a goal in an unsettled situation to force the fifth tie at 8-8.

However, the Camels regained their one-goal advantage when Bertolini took a nice pass from Barton and flicked one and rifled one home with eight second left and the Camels had a 9-8 lead after three.

Both defense clamped down in the fourth quarter. But with 2:40 left, Hegarty was rewarded when he made a nice cut to the cage. Bertolini was the facilitator on the goal that put the hosts on top 10-8.

But the Hawks would not go away and with 2:06 remaining, Kelly executed a nice wraparound move to score for the visitors and make it a 10-9 game.

The Hawks had one last chance and used a timeout with 31 seconds left to set up their offense. But Connecticut College freshman Timothy Covel (Cheshire, Conn.) induced a turnover with some nice stick work and Kieran Morris (Ridgewood, N.J.) corralled the ground ball for the hosts to close out the win.
