Men’s Lacrosse uses OT goal for win over Babson

Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass. — The Roger Williams University Men's Lacrosse team came away with 10-9 overtime victory over Babson College in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon at MacDowell Field.

Sophomore Will Siefert (Duxbury, Mass.) scored his only goal of the day with 13 seconds remaining in overtime to secure the victory. With the win, Roger Williams is now 5-1 on the year, while Babson drops to 2-4 overall.

Sophomores Spencer Low (Natick, Mass.) and Alex Youngwall (Huntington, N.Y.) each scored twice for the Beavers. Junior Alex Barsalou (Longmeadow, Mass.) chipped in with a goal and a season-high three assists, while classmate Christian Cattaruzza (Guilford, Conn.) led the Green and White with six groundballs and four caused turnovers.

Junior Mike Hanna (Somers, Conn.) scored a game-high five goals to go along with one assist, while senior Jon Nessa (Concord, Mass.) contributed two goals and one assist for the Hawks. Sophomore Tim Kelly (Ridgefield, Conn.) forced a game-high five turnovers, and senior Alan Williams (Bristol, R.I.) won 16-of-22 face-offs and led all players with 10 groundballs.

Both offenses were clicking early as the teams combined for nine first-quarter goals. Youngwall and Low gave Babson a quick 2-0 edge before Kelly and Hanna struck for scores 60 seconds apart to pull even with 9:13 left in the period. Cattarruzza notched his first goal of the season, and Low converted a feed from Barsalou, as the Beavers moved back in front 4-2, but the Hawks scored three times in the final 4:31 of the opening stanza to go in front 5-4.

Both squads missed on extra-man opportunities early in the second quarter before sophomore Brendan Coan (Towson, Md.) tied the game with 8:49 left before halftime for the Green and White. Youngwall and first-year Connor D'Amelia (Newtown, Pa.) then notched back-to-back tallies midway through the period to give the Beavers a 7-5 lead. Senior John Riccardi (Duxbury, Mass.) stopped the spurt with his second goal of the year for Roger Williams, and Hanna struck for his fourth marker of the day to send the teams into halftime tied at 7-7.

Both defenses took over in the third quarter as both squads went scoreless over the first 10:21 while committing a combined 19 turnovers in the period. Nessa gave the Hawks their first lead since late in the first quarter with a goal in transition, but junior Alex Bunick (Millis, Mass.) tallied his first goal of the year off a pass from senior Cam Spofford (Merrimac, Mass.) to pull even at 8-8 with just 39 seconds left in the third.

Babson regained the lead on Barsalou's seventh goal of the year with 11:59 to go in the fourth and had a chance to extend the lead just under two minutes later but sophomore Scott Doten's (Western Springs, Ill.) shot from the top of the zone rang off the post. Hanna notched his fifth goal of the game on the Hawks next possession to make it 9-9 with 9:19 to go.

Babson senior Adam Daroff (Pepper Pike, Ohio) made three late saves and his counterpart, junior Luke Aubrey (Norwalk, Conn.) of Roger Williams, made two late stops, including a denial of a shot by Coan on a Beavers' man-up opportunity with 2:46 left, to send the game to overtime.

The Hawks won the initial face-off of the extra session but were unable to capitalize on a 60-second man-up opportunity following a Babson penalty. The Beavers later had an 18 second two-man advantage but came up empty setting up Siefert's game winner with time winding down in the first overtime.

Daroff stopped 10 shots for the Green and White, while Aubrey finished with nine saves for Roger Williams.

Babson had a 44-40 edge in groundballs and were 24-of-27 on clear attempts. The Hawks scored the only man-up goal of the game and finished 1-for-6 on extra-man opportunities while holding the Green and White scoreless in nine man-up situations.

The Beavers return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Colorado College for a 3 p.m. ET start, while Roger Williams will host UMass-Dartmouth at 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
