Men’s Lacrosse holds off Wheaton for the Win

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams Men's Lacrosse team held off a second half rally to beat the Lyons of Wheaton 11-7.  The Hawks improve to 3-1 overall while the Lyons drop to 2-2.

The Hawks opened the first half with five unanswered goals to take the early advantage.  Nick Gagnon (Milton, Mass.) worked the ball to an open Jon Nessa for the first score at 10:16 in the first period.  PJ McGovern (Garden City, N.Y.) dished to Tim Kelly for the second with 4:43 left in the first period.  Gagnon continued to create openings for his teammates in the second period grabbing his second assist on Will Seifert (Duxbury, Mass.) man up goal at 11:52 and his third assist when Dan Arket (Poughquag, N.Y. ) finished at 11:35.  Nessa found an open John Mills (Cohasset, Mass.) at 10:02 to finish the five goal run.

Wheaton's Barrett Jenness (Edmonds, Wash.) had a hand in both of Wheaton first half goals hitting Matthew Hillman at 4:31 to put the Lyons on the board and finishing on the mark after taking a pass from Cam Hanlon (Hanson, Mass.) to bring the score to 5-2 at the half.

Nessa opened the second half with two more scores to give the Hawks there second five goal lead of the day.

Jenness would answer for the Lyons with two of his own goals and give the Lyons some momentum to chip away at the Hawks lead.

The Lyons pulled within two goals twice in the third period closing on goals by Jenness at 5:45 and Will Morrison (Osterville, Mass.) at 00:43 to bring the contest to 9-7 in the closing seconds of the third period.

The Hawks defense weathered a number of runs in the 4th period without giving up a score while Kelly punched two more in the back of the net to put the game out of reach.

Luke Aubrey (Norwalk, Conn.) recorded 12 saves in the win for the Hawks while Harrison Bramhall (Barrington, R.I.) saved 4 shots in the loss.

RWU held a significant 14-6 advantage in face offs thanks to the handy work of Alan Williams (Bristol, R.I.).

The Hawks will return to action on March 12 at 1:00 p.m. to take Swathmore College in Swathmore, PA.  and the Lyons travel to New London, Conn. to take on the Camels to Connecticut College, March 11th at 2:00 p.m.
