Men's Lacrosse swoops past UNE

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Men's Lacrosse team upends the Nor'easters of the University of New England 14-10 in a Commonwealth Coast Conference match up. The Hawks improve to 10-2 and 3-1 in the CCC, while UNE falls to 3-8 and 0-3 in the CCC. The Hawks' Jon Nessa (Concord, Mass.) led all scorers with five goals, while Nick Gagnon (Milton, Mass) tallied a game-high six assists.

The Nor'easters picked up the first score when Nick Gross (Kennebunk, Maine) finished a drive with 12:14 to play in the first quarter. The Hawks answered at 10:03 when Gagnon connected with Will Seifert (Duxbury, Mass.) for his first goal of the day. At 7:21 John Riccardi (Duxbury, Mass.) led a break that drew the defense and dished to Nessa who settled on the left perimeter and fired one in the top left corner. At 4:16 Geoff Bruno (Durham, Conn.) picked up a loose ball for the Nor'easters that was knocked out of the goalie's stick and pushed into the goal. Nessa finished on his second goal with the assist from Mike Hanna (Somers, Conn.) at 3:15.

Hanna would switch from playmaker to scorer to tally his first goal at 12:12 to play in the second period. Todd Carson (Pennington, N.J.) found an open Siefert to give the Hawks a 5-2 lead at 9:45 to play in the half. The Nor'easters would cut the lead on a Mike Allan (Billerica, Mass.) goal that was assisted by Dan Auger (Nashua, N.H.). Caleb Kenney (Portland, Maine) found Siefert who completed his hat-trick to bring the score to 6-3 with 7:12 to play. Sam Cloutier (Lewiston, Maine) took matters into his own hands at 5:41 to cut the Hawks lead to two. The Hawks would retaliate by scoring three unanswered goals to close out the half 9-4. Gagnon fed Nessa at 2:29 and then hit Hanna at 1:49 to play. Riccardi found Nessa at 0:44.

The Nor'easters would strike first coming out of the half with Dan O'Gorman hitting Patrick Wolfe (Phippsburg, Maine) at 13:03. Gagnon and Nessa would reconnect for the Hawks at 8:40 to bring the score to 10-5 in the Hawks favor. Gross would create space and hit his mark at 6:32 to close the gap to 10-6, but Nessa made the extra pass hitting Tim Kelly (Ridgefield, Conn.) at 4:51 to up the score to 11-6. The Nor'easters would take advantage of a man up power play when Bruno found O'Gorman at 2:34 to make it 11-7. Gagnon tallied his fifth assist when he hit Siefert for his fourth goal with 1:03 left in the third period.

Max Cammarota (Redding, Conn.) opened the scoring in the final period on Gagnon's sixth assist to put the Hawks up 13-7.

Wolfe tallied his second goal on a pass from Cloutier to cut the Hawks lead to five with 7:43 left in the game. John Listano (Guilford, Conn.) netted the Hawks last score with 2:46 giving the Hawks a healthy six goal lead in the closing minutes. UNE would score two more unassisted goals by Gross and Dan Auger in the closing minutes to bring the final score to 14-10.

Joe Medel (Chesapeake, Va.) saved 17 shots in the loss while Luke Aubrey matched his saves to earn the win. Alan Williams (Bristol, R.I.) had another strong showing gaining possession for the Hawks 25 of the 28 face-offs.

The Hawks will be back in action at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 9, to take on Western New England University in Bristol, R.I., at Bayside Field, while UNE will host Gordon at the same time in Biddeford, Maine.
