Wrestling closes season at NCAA Championships

HERSHEY, Pa. - The Roger Williams University Wrestling team qualified five wrestlers for the NCAA Championships at the Giant Center in Hershey, Pa. Juniors David Welch (Salem, N.H.) made his second appearance in the championship earning All-American Honors at 184 lbs. in 2014 and qualifying at 197 this year. Juniors Francisco Colom (Ridgefield, N.J.) and Dan Ressler (Hillsdale, N.J.) as well as sophomores Ty Herzog (Slatington, Pa.) and Kyle Foster (Somers, Conn.) each make their first trip to nationals.

Welch earned a 18-6 major decision in his first round match with Brian Olson from Mount Union. In the second round welch dropped a 6-2 decision to the fourth seeded Joe Giaramita of SUNY-Cortland. In the All-American round Welch lost a 4-1 decision to Aaron Karns of Delaware Valley that ends his season.

Colom was edged 4-2 by Jake Krogstad from Concordia-Moorhead in his opening match. Colom then dropped a 6-4 decision in sudden death overtime to bring his championship to a close.

Ressler lost a 12-4 decision to Tyrell Martin of Augsburg in his opening match. Ressler was then pinned by the fourth seeded Brandon Welter of Wartburg to end his NCAA Championship tournament.

Herzog dropped his first round match to the fifth seed Steven DeWitt of Loras 13-8 in the 157 lb bracket. In the wrestlebacks bracket Herzog won his second match earning a 10-8 decision over Sean Byham from Thiel. Herzogs championship run came to an end in 13-5 loss to Kevin Collins of Ithaca.

Foster (Somers, Conn.) was unable to compete and forfeited his matches.

The Hawks sit in 42nd place with 2.5 points at the conclussion of day one at the NCAA National Champions. The teams season ends with an overall record of 18-1 and their third consecutive Pilgrim League Championship.
