Men’s Lacrosse keeps Fighting Scots at bay with win

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Men's Lacrosse team extended its winning streak to four straight with a 13-11 win over Gordon College Saturday afternoon.

It was a close game throughout all four quarters, starting with a goal by Michael Utz (Rochester, N.Y.) two minutes in to give the Fighting Scots a 1-0 lead. Roger Williams responded with three goals, two by Tim Kelly (Ridgefield, Conn.) and one by Will Siefert (Duxbury, Mass.). Roger Evans (Oxford, Pa.) and Kelly traded goals in the final two minutes to keep the Hawk advantage at two going into the second quarter.

Offense was hard to come by in the second period, with Michael Utz contributing the lone score to bring the Fighting Scots within one at halftime. However that theme would change in the third period, as both teams combined for 11 goals in the quarter.

Jordan Heckelmann (Colorado Springs, Colo.) opened up with a goal for Gordon before Mike Hanna (Somers, Conn.) and Siefert answered with two goals for RWU. Michael Utz would then power the Fighting Scots back in the game, scoring three times as part of a 4-0 run in a two-minute stretch to tie the game at eight. However the Hawks closed out the period with two goals of their own to go back up by two.

In the fourth quarter, Gordon made things interesting, pulling two within one (10-11) with just under eight minutes to play, but a crucial caused turnover by Garrett Ficara (Somers, Conn.) led to a Kelly goal two build the lead back up by two. Both teams traded scores in the final five minutes, allowing RWU to escape with the win.

Connor Carroll (Madison, Conn.) earned the win, allowing eight goals with five saves in relief of starter Luke Aubrey (Norwalk, Conn.) who had six stops. Kelly finished with six points on five goals and an assist, while Siefert added four points (3 G, 1 A).

Cody Greenwald (Albany, N.Y.) had 15 saves for Gordon in the loss. Michael Utz led the Fighting Scots with six goals, while Nico Manganiello (Peabody, Mass.) contributed a goal and three assists.

Roger Williams (6-3, 1-1 CCC) faces Salve Regina next, while Gordon (4-7, 1-2 CCC) hosts Western New England on Tuesday.
