Sailing Finishes Weekend Strong

HANOVER, N.H.-- The Roger Williams University Sailing team competed in three in-conference regattas September 30 and October 1: the Hewitt Trophy (10/15), the George Warren Smith Trophy (2/18), and an inter-conference regatta, the 75th Danmark Trophy (3/20). The Hawks also raced in a fourth regatta this weekend which resulted in a slight schedule change, the Invite at Harvard University (1/9).

The Hawks competed for the Hewitt Trophy in which they placed 10th out of 15 teams. The six sailors who competed in this regatta were Conner Harding (Naples, Fla.), Michael McBrien (East Patchogue, N.Y.), Edward Lebens (Oyster Bay, N.Y.), Megan Roach (Newport Beach, Calif.), Preston Duclos (Westport, Mass.) and Kylie Freitas (Escondido, Calif.). Harding and McBrien had the top finish of the event, coming in fourth out of their division. Duclos and Freitas followed, finishing 11th overall within their division as Lebens and Roach finished 12th.

In the George Warren Smith Trophy hosted by MIT, four sailors competed and achieved the runner up position. Peter Neal (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) and Kristi Dolan (West Islip, N.Y.) placed second overall within Division A. The Hawks' second boat, sailed by Daniel Petrovic (Tortola, BVI) and Ariana Smaldone (Tiverton, R.I.), earned third within the B Division.

At the next regatta, hosted by Coast Guard, the 75th Danmark Trophy, four Hawks helped clinch third place. Racing for Division A was Mackenzie Bryan (Christiansted, USVI) and Jennifer Agell (Huntington, N.Y.), who placed ninth overall. Placing third in Division B was Martim Anderson (Libson, Portugal) and Rebecca Anderson (Northport, N.Y.).

At the final regatta of the weekend, the Invite at Harvard University, the Hawks gained first place with the help of two teams. The first team coming in third was sailed by Spencer Cartwright (Nassau, Bahamas) and Rachel Holick (Lawrence, N.J.). Following in fourth place came Leif Bergstrom (Hood River, Ore.) and Riley Read (Portland, Ore.).

Next weekend the Hawks will host three regattas: the Southern Series Five in Bristol, R.I., the Storm Trysail College Big Boats in Larchmont, N.Y. and the North U Keelboat Clinic in Newport, R.I. They will participate in two others at Navy for the Women's Intersectional and at the University of Rhode Island for the Moody Trophy.
