BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Sailing team sailed to a pair of second-place finishes at the St. Mary's Team Race and Phebe Corckran King Women's Team Race, while placing fourth at the John Jackson Memorial and sixth at the Bob Bavier Open Team Race.
At St. Mary's for the Team Race Inter-Conference, the Hawks placed second in a 10-team field, finishing at 8-1, while Stanford finished 9-0 to take the top spot. The Hawks saw the squad of Carlos Bermudez de Castro (La Crouña, Spain), Kyle Pfrang (Suffolk, Va.), and Oliver Stokke (Santa Barbara, Calif.) combining with crews Addy Fisher (Charleston, S.C.), Jed Lory (Severna Park, Md.), and Carter Sheehan (Middletown, R.I.).
The Hawks picked up seven of their eight wins with a 1-2 finish, while earning a win ver Charleston in a 3-4-5 placement. The Hawks' lone loss came to the eventual champions in Stanford.
At Charleston for the Phebe Corckran King Women's Team Race, the Hawks finished second in the five-team field, compiling a record of 8-4, with Lucy Meagher (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.), Tavia Smith (Wilmington, N.C.), and Katie McGagh (League City, Texas) serving as the team's skippers, and Maren Matthews (Harbor Springs, Mich.), Mackenzie Speece (Shelter Island, N.Y.), and Elyssa Franklin (St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands) working as the crews. Tulane took the title going 9-3, while the Hawks edged out against the hosts on tiebreakers.
In Round 1, the Hawks went 3-1, dropping only their race to MIT, ahead of going 2-2 in the second round. The Hawks finished with a 3-1 finish in round three to close out, while going 3-0 against Charleston.
At Georgetown at the John Jackson Memorial Team Race, the Hawks placed fourth out of eight teams with a 4-6 records. The Eagles of Boston College took the top spot while posting a 9-1 record.
Connor McHugh (Annadale, N.J.), Drew Mastovsky (Marion, Mass.), and Jonathon Reece Schwartz (Miami, Fla.) skippered the Hawks, while Maggie Flemming (San Diego, Calif.), Maddy Martin (Indianapolis, Ind.), and Dawson Chambers-Tartaglino (Soners, Mont.) were the crews.
In the opening round robin, the Hawks went 3-4, earning a spot in the top four, as they broke the tie with a head-to-head victory against Penn. In the final four, the Hawks were able to secure a win over Hobart & Williams Smith, but fell to Boston College and Georgetown. The Hawks and Hobart & Williams Smith then went head-to-head in a sail off to decide third place, but the Hawks fell.
Rounding out the weekend at the Bob Bavier Open Team Race, the Hawks placed sixth going 5-8 on the weekend, with a team consisting of skippers Bo Angus (Richmond, Va.), Parker Moore (Hampton, Va.), Jack Roman (Newport Beach, Calif.), and Tristan McDonald (Lake Forest, Ill.) and crews Jancy Grayson (Falmouth, Mass.), Peter Cotoia (South Yarmouth, Mass.), Dominik Moncur (Plymouth, Minn.), and Frankie Sparrow (Portland, Maine).
The Hawks went 2-5 in the opening round robin, with wins coming against St. Mary's and North Carolina State. The Hawks then went into round two, defeating St. Mary's and NC State for a second time, while knocking off Jacksonville for a third win in the round robin.
