Sailing: Hawks Take Top Finishes in Two of Four Regattas

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Sailing team took the top spots at the RWU Team Race and BC Team Race, while finishing third and fourth at the Friis Trophy and Duplin Women's Team Race, respectively.

At the Friis Trophy, the Hawks posted a 14-5 record as Carlos Bermudez de Castro (La Coruña, Spain), Kyle Pfrang (Suffolk, Va.), and Oliver Stokke (Santa Barbara, Calif.) were the Hawks' skippers, while Addy Fisher (Charleston, S.C.), Jed Lory (Severna Park, Md.), Jakub Fuja (Glenview, Ill.), and Carter Sheehan (Middletown, R.I.) were the crews.

Roger Williams went 6-2 in the opening round, falling to Harvard and Stamford. The Hawks then went 5-3 in the second round, falling to Boston College, Stamford, and Harvard. The Hawks were able to reach the final four, posting a 3-0 record, but were unable to overcome the deficit heading into the final round.

At Tufts, for the Duplin Women's Team Race, the Hawks finished tied for third, falling to fourth through tiebreakers. The Hawks squad consisted of skippers Lucy Meagher (Fort Lauderdale Fla.), Tavia Smith (Wilmington, N.C.), and Maren Matthews (Harbor Springs, Mich.), as well as crews Elyssa Franklin (St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands), Mackenzie Speece (Shelter Island, N.Y.), and Dawson Chambers-Tartaglino (Somers, Mont.).

The Hawks opened the regatta with a 6-3 record, dropping their races to Harvard, Bowdoin, and MIT. The Hawks went 4-3 in the second round, falling to Yale and Tufts, while also dropping their race to Brown. The Hawks and Tufts would go to a third-place sail-off, falling to the Jumbos.

At the BC Team Race, the Hawks finished tied for first with Brown for the top spot with a 9-1 record. Drew Mastovsky (Marion, Mass.), Parker Moore (Hampton, Va.), and Tristan McDonald (Lake Forest, Ill.) were the skippers with Maddy Martin (Indianapolis, Ind.), Peter Cotoia (South Yarmouth, Mass.), and Sophia Litos (Dartmouth, Mass.) sailing as crews.

In the first round robin, the Hawks went 4-1, falling only to Brown, with a 2-4-5 finish, before rebounding for a 5-0 sweep in the second round robin.

Rounding out the weekend at their home regatta, the Hawks posted a perfect 10-0 record at the RWU team race, with Bo Angus (Richmond, Va.), Connor McHugh (Annadale, N.J.), Jack Roman (Newport Beach, Calif.), Ludwik Grzelak (Warsaw, Poland), and Jonathan Reece Schwartz (Miami, Fla.) sailing as skippers, with crews Dom Spinola (Dartmouth, Mass.), Maggie Fleming (San Diego, Calif.), Litos, and Didier Schouten (Eze, France).  

The Hawks recorded 1-2 finishes in four of their five races, while winning against Boston College 1-3-4. In the second round, the Hawks recorded all five wins, with 1-2 finishes, and finished 1-2-3 against the Eagles and Boston University.
