BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Roger Williams University Wrestling team collected a 50-0 shutout win over Hunter College Saturday afternoon at the NEWA-Metro Dual Challenge.
The Hawks finished 1-2 on the day after dropping a pair of close matches in their first two bouts on the day. The College of New Jersey held off RWU 19-12 in the opener, while Centenary edged RWU 21-19 in the second match.
Against TCNJ, the Hawks found themselves down 10-0 after the first three matches before
Justin Cochran (Paramus, N.J.) earned RWU's first points with a 6-1 win over Eric Friedman at 149. Tyler Gazaway (New Providence, N.J.) and Taylor Shay (New Fairfield, Conn.) picked up victories at 157 and 165 to pull RWU within one. However, RWU dropped three of the final four matches as TCNJ held on for the win.
Tristan Haviland (Trumbull, Conn.) put RWU on top 5-3 against Centenary with a 16-0 technical fall over Bobby Demeter at 133. Centenary took the next two bouts before Gazaway and Shay pulled off a 19-2 tech fall and a 3-2 decision to bring RWU back up by one (13-12). The turning point came at RWU's loss via pin at 197, giving the Cyclones a 21-16 advantage.
Adam Patsun (Somers, Conn.) turned in an 8-5 win over Anthony Colabella in the heavyweight match, but it was not enough to give RWU the team victory.
The final match of the day was a one-sided affair completely in the Hawks' favor, including four wins via forfeit for Roger Williams.
Nicholas Barbaria (Scarsdale, N.Y.) dominated Hamad Amir 26-7 at 125, while Mike Fernandes (Rockaway, N.J.) also earned a 17-1 tech fall at 197 over Anthony Fitzsimmons. Michael Mirmina (Trumbull, Conn.) downed William Heine 7-4, while Cochran pinned Ronaldo Rodriguez in 1:11.
