Men’s Polo Falls To Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — The Roger Williams University Men's Polo team suffered a 25-7 setback to the University of Virginia this past weekend in the team's first match of the season.

The Cavaliers scored first before a pony goal tied up the match for RWU. However, UVA answered with five consecutive goals before Matt Boccanfuso (Purchase, N.Y.) was able to halt the run with a goal. UVA added one more tally in the first chukka to take a 7-2 lead.

Pedro Cabrera (Santo Domingo, D.R.) responded with his first goal of the game after Virginia scored the first goal of the second chukka. Yet another UVA put the Hawks in a large deficit, as five unanswered Cavalier goals gave UVA a 13-3 lead going into halftime.

George Hempt (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) tallied the only goal of the third chukka for Roger Williams as Virginia outscored the Hawks 9-1 in the period. Boccanfuso added two more goals in the final chukka while Cabrera scored once. However the deficit proved to be too much for RWU as UVA took the win.

Boccanfuso finished with three goals for the Hawks, while Cabrera scored twice and Hempt once.
