The Roger Williams University Athletic Department has announced that it will discontinue Men's Polo as a varsity sport beginning the 2020-21 academic year.
Â
"After much thought and consideration, the difficult decision has been made to drop the Men's Polo program," said
Kiki Jacobs, Director of Athletics, Intramurals, and Recreation. "Men's Polo has been successful in the past, but due to low roster numbers and limited competition in the area, we concluded this program was no longer sustainable."Â
Â
During the 2019-20 season, the program was unable to field the minimum number of players required to play. As a result, Men's Polo was unable to play any contests over the course of the season.
Â
The Men's Polo program began in 2015, with the team collecting its first-ever win on October 25 in a 22-12 win over the University of Connecticut. The team quickly soared to new heights in the 2016-17 season, capping off an undefeated season by capturing the USPA Collegiate National Championship with a 14-13 win over Southern Methodist University. The program's last match came in March 2019, where the team fell 10-23 to the University of Western Ontario in the USPA Collegiate Northeast Regionals.
Â
The discontinuation of Men's Polo brings Roger Williams University to 23 varsity sports.
