Men’s Polo Notches First Win Of The Season

PORTSMOUTH, R.I. — The Roger Williams University Men's Polo team earned its first win of the year with a 20-10 victory over Skidmore College.

The first chukka saw both teams trade goals back and forth. Pedro Cabrera (Santo Domingo, D.R.) scored first for RWU before Skidmore's Aaron Schneider answered with a goal. Alex Conde (Catlett, Va.) and George Hempt (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) scored next for the Hawks, but Schneider had a tally after each RWU score. The score would be tied at three after the opening period.

Schneider scored the first goal in the second chukka for Skidmore's first lead. Similar to the first, the two sides went goal-for goal, as Cabrera scored twice after a Thoroughbred goal, eventually tying things up at five. He gave RWU the lead back at 6-5 with a goal before Schneider scored again to tie the match back up. Cabrera would score the final goal of the period to give RWU a slim 7-6 lead at halftime.

After the break, the Hawks would blow the match wide open in the third chukka. RWU outscored Skidmore 9-0 in the period with four goals from Cabrera, three goals from Conde, and two goals from Hempt. The Hawks would take a commanding 16-6 lead going into the final period.

Both teams scored four goals apiece in the final chukka. However, Roger Williams' solid ten-goal lead helped ease RWU to the win.

Cabrera led the match with nine goals scored, while Conde added eight tallies. Hempt scored twice while Matt Boccanfuso (Purchase, N.Y.) scored one goal.
