BRISTOL, R.I. — The Roger Williams University Wrestling team won against LIU Post in a close match this Saturday, 23-20.
In the opener, the Pioneers won by injury default 0-6 at 125. Anthony Dushaj (Dix Hills, N.Y.) then extended LIU's lead with a takedown 5-2 against
Jon Mejia (Roselle Park, N.J.) at 133.
Joe Calderone (Huntington Station, N.Y.) took down
Chris Fuschetto (Clark, N.J.) at 141, putting the score at 12-0. Giving RWU their first five points,
Tyler Gazaway (New Providence, N.J.) defeated Daniel Espineira (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) in a technical fall 17-2.
Tightening the match,
Jack Kelly (Wall, N.J.) won for the Hawks in a forfeit to bring the score to 11-12.
Michael Mirmina (Trumbull, Conn.) defeated Kenny Cooper (Deer Park, N.Y.) 7-5 in a takedown to give RWU their first lead at 14-12.
Ed Ramirez (Massapequa, N.Y.) and Dan McClure (Westhampton, N.Y.) both won in a major decision over their opponents to bring the Pioneers back in the lead at 20-14.
Anthony Malfitano (Pearl River, N.Y.) cut the Pioneers lead to three with a takedown at 184 in 8-1.
Adam Patsun (Somers, Conn.) defeated Damien Caffrey (East Northport, N.Y.) with a fall to win the match for the Hawks, 23-20.
Both Roger Williams University (11-8) and Long Island University (6-10) head to Johnson and Wales in the Wildcat Open this Sunday.
