SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – In their first head-to-head dual of the season, the Roger Williams University Wrestling team jumped out to an early advantage but ultimately fell, 27-18 to Springfield College at the Blake Arena on Friday night. The Hawks opened up a double-digit advantage through four matches but allowed it to slip away in the loss.
With the defeat the RWU falls to 9-3 in all duals action thus far this season. Meanwhile, the Pride improve to 3-0 in duals matches.
The two teams opened action in the 165-pound weight class on this evening, as
Jack Kelly (Sea Girt, N.J.) drew a matchup opposite Jake Harry (Lancaster, N.Y.). Harry would post a 12-3 victory by major decision for Springfield, claiming a 4-0 lead.
RWU would respond by going on a run through the next three weight classes.
Jacob Cardozo (Southington, Conn.) got the Hawks on the board with a 3-0 victory over Dillan Palaszewski (Galway, N.Y.) at 174 ahead of pins by
Cole Shaughnessy (Fairfield, Conn.) and
Travis Arata (Riverdale, N.J.) over John Summers (Fairfield, Conn.) and Nathanael Tejeda (Nashua, N.H.) at 184 and 197 respectively as Roger Williams opened an 15-4 advantage.
The Pride then proceeded to close the gap. First, Michael Filleri (Garfield, N.J.) edged
Addison Boisvert (Scarborough, Maine) by decision, 8-4 at heavyweight, before the weight classes flipped to the bottom and
Connor Keegan (Sandwich, Mass.) fell to Joey Manginelli (Dumont, N.J.) by way of a tech fall, 16-1, at 125 to cut the score to 15-12.
Gianni Manginelli (Dumont, N.J.) battled
Kyle Kaiser (Paramus, N.J.) all the way at 133 but ultimately, in overtime, Kaiser managed to catch Manginelli trying to spin behind and finish a takedown, and instead was able to get two points for himself and claim a 3-1 win by decision and get a six-point edge for the Hawks. However, Springfield responded to tie things at 18 after Chris Trelli (Bristol, Conn.) was able to claim a win over
Andy Lombard (Monroe Township, N.J.) by way of an injury default at 141.
As a result, this contest would come down to the final two matchups. At 149, Chase Parrot (Stamford, Conn.) was able to get past
Ben Bariso (Butler, N.J.) by decision, 6-1 thus leaving the match up for grabs entering the final bout at 157.
Michael Forte (Westbury, N.Y.) got the nod for the Hawks opposite Jacob Deguire (Schenectady, N.Y.) in what was a wild match from start to finish. Deguire got an early lead in the first period, but Forte closed the gap late in the second with a sequence that saw him get two for a reversal, four near-fall points, and within inches of pinning Deguire but he could not finish the deal. Holding a 16-10 advantage into the third, Deguire started on bottom, got the reversal, and eventual turned Forte onto his back to secure the pin and the Springfield victory, 27-18.
