Shaughnessy Excels, Wrestling Rebounds From Early Loss To Take Ninth At New England Duals

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Following an opening round defeat, the Roger Williams University Wrestling team would rebound to go 3-1 and take ninth at the New England Duals hosted by Johnson & Wales University at the Wildcat Center on Sunday. Kyle Kaiser (Paramus, N.J.) and Cole Shaughnessy (Fairfield, Conn.) would each go 4-0 individually on the day, with the latter winning every match by way of a fall.

As a team, RWU would drop their opening matchup to Norwich University, 27-21 but responded with dominating wins the rest of the way, beating Bridgewater State University, 54-0, Wesleyan University, 32-11, and Trinity College, 38-7. Due to the format of the bracket and how placings are determined at the event, Roger Williams, despite going 3-1 finished ninth out of the 15 teams in attendance.

The Hawks were seeded number-five entering the tournament, receiving an opening round matchup against the 12th seeded Norwich University and it proved to be troublesome. They started out strong with a Connor Keegan (Sandwich, Mass.) victory by decision, 5-2 over Dylan King (Milsboro, Del.) and a quick pin of Aidan Schaefer (Westfield, N.J.) by Kaiser. However, then the Cadets turned the tide with consecutive pins from Joseph Lotruglio (Andover, N.J.), Kyle Merritt (Hope Valley, R.I.), and Cameron Wooldridge (Roanoke, Va.) over Peter Tringali (Chester, N.J.), Ben Bariso (Butler, N.J.), and Jack Kelly (Sea Girt, N.J.) respectively.

Jacob Cardozo (Southington, Conn.) got a win by decision for RWU over Tyler Barker (Round Rock, Texas), 9-5 before Norwich's Daniel Curran (Peterborough, N.H.) pinned Jayden Curley (Mansfield, Mass.). The Hawks were not deterred and got back within three on a pin of James Spellman (Norwood, Mass.) at the hands of Shaughnessy and a win by decision by Travis Arata (Riverdale, N.J.), 12-8 over Niko Chitty (Coral Springs, Fla.).

As a result, this one would come down to the heavyweights, and Addison Boisvert (Scarborough, Maine) had a chance to complete the comeback and help Roger Williams survive. Unfortunately, Mason Sprinkle (Bel Air, Maryland) proved to be too much, shutting out Boisvert on his way to a 5-0 win by decision and completing the upset, 27-21.

After their opening round loss, RWU drew Bridgewater State in the first round of the consolation bracket and they would make quick work of the Bears earning the shutout win, 54-0. Kaiser, Bariso, Cardozo, Shaughnessy, Christopher Tringali (Chester, N.J.), and Jackson Curran (Melrose, Mass.) all collected wins by fall, Keegan pitched in a win by tech fall, and Leonard Breit (Johnson, R.I.) received a forfeit. Arata won by major decision, 12-0 and Michael Forte (Westbury, N.Y.) would round out the Hawks scoring, with a 2-1 win by decision.

In the following round, Roger Williams would face off against Wesleyan University. The Cardinals would jump in front at 125 as Shailen Savur (Robbinsville, N.J.) held off Keegan to win by decision, 4-2. The Hawks would respond winning the next three however, Kaiser beat Max Martinez (Montvale, N.J.) by major decision, 13-3, Christopher Tringalli beat CJ Shea (Denville, N.J.) by decision in sudden victory, 5-3, and Bariso breezed past Dario Molina (Riverhead, N.Y.), winning by major decision, 16-8.

Wesleyan climbed back in it thanks to wins by major decision by Aaron Goldman (Great Neck, N.Y.) and Marco Gaita (Long Valley, N.J.) over Forte and Breit, with those straddling a Cardozo win by major decision, 10-2 over Jack Reusing (Brooklyn, N.Y.). RWU would pull away at the upper weight classes though with Shaughnessy collecting his third pin of the day over Duncan Kreutter (Plainsboro, N.J.) and Arata beating Joshua Koshayev (Brooklyn, N.Y.) by fall in overtime. Spencer Fetrow (Holliston, Mass.) would wrap up things up by bumping up a weight class to take care of Kolton Gagnon by tech fall, 19-4 to finalize the RWU victory, 32-11.

In their final dual of the day, Roger Williams would face off against Trinity College, and easily handled the Bantams. They staked themselves to an early lead, winning the four of the first five matches. Ben Dubois (Rehoboth, Mass.) got a win by decision, 9-6, Kaiser won by major decision, 9-1, Bariso got a pin early in the second period, and Forte won by major decision, 9-1 with those results being spilt evenly by a Chris Perry (Mohegan Lake, N.Y.) win by decision over Peter Tringali.

At 165, Kevin Lyskawa (Londonderry, N.H.) handed Cardozo his lone defeat of the day, winning by major decision, 13-4. However, it would be all Hawks from there, Breit got a win by major decision, 12-2 over Dylan Reynolds (Greenwich, Conn.) ahead of another pin by Shaughnessy and a second win by tech fall by Fetrow over Timothy Glynn (West Windsor, N.J.). Boisvert would put the finishing touches on the RWU win with an early pin to make the final score, 38-7.
