Wrestling Opens New Year By Putting 17 In Top-4 At Williams Invitational

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – The Roger Williams University Wrestling team had 17 wrestlers finish in the top four including five in first place, as they opened the new year with a strong showing at the Williams Invitational hosted by Williams College on Saturday. No team scores were kept at the event but Travis Arata (Riverdale, N.J.), Ben Bariso (Butler, N.J.), Addison Boisvert (Scarborough, Maine), Kyle Kaiser (Paramus, N.J.), and Cole Shaughnessy (Fairfield, Conn.) each finished atop their respective weight classes.

Competing as one of five teams at the event, the Hawks really stood out in the 149 and 197-pound brackets, putting three in the top-four of each weight class. At 149, Bariso beat Matt Lucas (Danbury, Conn.) by decision, 7-2 in the finals while Tom Cullerton (Nashua, N.H.) also took fourth. Meanwhile at 197, Arata encountered Spencer Fetrow (Holliston, Mass.) in the finals, claiming the win by decision, 8-3. They were followed by Noah Tandy (West Orange, N.J.) who took third by knocking off Wesleyan's Joshua Khoshayev (Brooklyn, N.Y.) in the consolation finals, 4-2.

RWU also had a pair of placers at 125, 141, 174, and 184. In one of the best matches of the day, Ben Dubois (Rehoboth, Mass.) beat Ari Dinerman (Ashland, Mass.) by decision in the 125-pound consolation finals, 1-0. At 141, Peter Tringali (Chester, N.J.) finished as the runner-up after falling to Joseph Rossetti, an unaffiliated competitor, in the finals by decision, 4-1. Travis Grebe (Sound Beach, N.Y.) took fourth at weight after falling to Williams' Jack Napeloni (Denville, N.J.) in the finals by major decision, 10-1. In the 174-pound weight class, Jayden Curley (Mansfield, Mass.) took second after he was pinned in the finals by Williams' Dante Gutbrod (Westford, Mass.) while Anthony Ostrander (Newbury, Mass.) took fourth after dropping a tough match in overtime against Marcus Brown (Central Valley, N.Y.) of Wesleyan, 6-5. At 184, Jack Rogers (New City, N.Y.) claimed fourth after getting pinned by Elias Chen (Silver Springs, Md.) of Williams but Shaughnessy also took the top spot by beating Williams' William Smith (Alexandra, Va.) by decision, 10-3.

Boisvert took the top spot at 285 by holding off Thomas Goodwin (Pompton Plains, N.J.) from Williams, winning by decision, 6-2. Meanwhile, at 133, Kaiser wound up being uncontested and as a result he took first by default. Rounding out the top-four finishers for Roger Williams was Ryan Grebe (Sound Beach, N.Y.) who finished third after winning by medical forfeit.

In all, the Hawks' 17 top-four finishers was the most of any team competing on the day while their five first place finishes were also the most for any team at the event.
