Arata, Boisvert, And Kaiser Compete At NCAA Championship For Wrestling

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – After punching their tickets with a top-three finish at the Regional Tournament, Travis Arata (Riverdale, N.J.), Addison Boisvert (Scarborough, Maine), and Kyle Kaiser (Paramus, N.J.) each represented the Roger Williams University Wrestling team at the NCAA Division III National Championships in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on Friday and Saturday. All three earned All-American Honorable Mention honors but they did not advance to the second day of competition.

Kaiser opened the tournament as the seventh seed at 133, drawing Zach Levey (Horseheads, N.Y.) of the College at Brockport in the first round. He staked himself to a quick advantage with a take down, then earned another point in the second period with an escape. Levey closed the gap to one with a takedown to end the frame, but an early takedown and a stalling call secured a 6-4 win.

Kaiser got a tough draw in the quarterfinals round however as he ended up facing the second seed, Dalton Rohrbaugh (Spring Grove, Penn.) from York College. Following an uneventful opening frame, Kaiser chose bottom in the second period and kept things tied with a pair of escapes on either side of a Rohrbaugh takedown. The action really picked up in the final period as Rohrbaugh took bottom and the two wrestlers traded reversals. Despite Kaiser's best efforts, Rohrbaugh would pull away with an escape and a takedown to send Kaiser to the loser's side of the bracket.

There Kaiser drew Josh Wilson (Greensboro, N.C.) of Greensboro College and once again things were tied at two entering the third. From there the young wrestler would stun Kaiser getting a reversal and after an escape he finished a late takedown to secure a 6-3 win.

Despite his meteoric rise at the regional tournament, Arata drew a tough road at the national championship as he was given a low seed and thus had to wrestle his way onto the full bracket at 197. He would do so by outlasting Dylan Wellbaum (Oxford, Mich.) of Adrian College. Arata grabbed a lead with a late first period takedown before extending his advantage with a second-period escape. Wellbaum got within two by escaping in the third, but Arata managed to hold off his opponent's late takedown attempts to get onto the bracket.

He ended up facing Tyler Hannah (Prairie du Chien, Wis.) of Wisconsin-Platteville and Arata stayed hot by claiming the upset win over the eighth-seeded Pioneer. Hannah held a 1-0 edge into the third but got even with an escape late in the period to tie things and send it into sudden victory. There, Arata grabbed the win by securing a takedown to advance to the quarterfinals. However, in his third match of the day, Arata drew the top-ranked wrestler at 197 in the nation, Cory Baldridge (Morris, Ill.) of North Central College and Baldridge showed why by sending Arata to the consolation bracket with a win by Tech Fall. Arata then wound up facing Gable Crebs (Montoursville, Penn.) of Lycoming College and he would see his outstanding run come to a close due to a second-period pin.

At 285, Boisvert would also encounter a tough path on the bracket, drawing the second seed, Kaleb Reeves (Sigourney, Iowa) from Coe College and quickly fell by way of an opening-period fall.

In the loser's bracket, Boisvert would face off against Owen Miller (Marshall, Mich.) from Albion College. He would find himself trailing 2-1 after the first frame. In the second period Boisvert started on bottom and escaped to even the score, but Miller secured a takedown to make the lead 4-2. In the final frame, action started in neutral, and Miller got a takedown then rode things out to get the 7-3 win.
