MANHEIM, Penn. – The Roger Williams University Wrestling team finished 16
th in the nation on the ranking of team scholar All-America by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) as it was announced recently. The team finished with a GPA of 3.613 as a collective, and in the process, they posted ten Scholar All-Americans, a number that is good for a tie for the second-most in the nation.
The Hawks that earned Scholar All-American honors individually were
Ben Bariso (Butler, N.J.),
Addison Boisvert (Scarborough, Maine),
Jacob Cardozo (Southington, Conn.),
Ben Dubois (Rehoboth, Mass.),
Michael Forte (Westbury, N.Y.),
Ryan Grebe (Sound Beach, N.Y.),
Kyle Kaiser (Paramus, N.J.),
Cole Shaughnessy (Fairfield, Conn.),
Peter Tringali (Chester, N.J.), and
Luke Wassel (Walpole, Mass.).
"Achieving Academic All-American status is the ultimate balance of our student-athletes and is a value that we take pride in within our program," Head Coach Jon Egan said. "I am so proud of these ten individuals who have not only strived to, but succeed in their goals to be excellent both on the matt and in the classroom."
For several wrestlers, they are receiving the recognition for a second or third time. For Cardozo, Grebe, and Tringali this marked the third consecutive year that they received Scholar All-American recognition. It was also the second time in which Bariso, Boisvert, and Shaughnessy were honored.
"On behalf of the NWCA Board of Directors, it is my honor to recognize these exceptional athletes and teams," NWCA Executive Director Mike Moyer said in the release by the NWCA. "Wrestling takes much focus and sacrifice, and we are proud to honor these wrestlers for their obvious commitment to their academic pursuits!"
Scholar All-Americans for the 2021-22 academic year went to wrestlers that had a 3.2 GPA or higher and had the potential, by coach's professional judgment to be a top-eight placer at a Regional event or, in case of extras in a weight, an individual who in coach's judgement would have a strong winning percentage.
325 total wrestlers received Scholar All-American recognition nationally this year, representing 87 different institutions.
