NEW ORLEANS, LA. – Competing at the ICSA COED Dinghy National Championships, hosted by Tulane University over the past few days, the Roger Williams University Sailing team came away with a 12
th place finish. After qualifying for the regatta over the weekend in the Western Semifinals, sheer volume of sailing done by the Hawks over the past week appeared to wear them down and inconsistency set in to take the finish out of the 18-team field.
Hawk Highlights
The event was sailed with a fleet racing format with Roger Williams having a single boat in both divisions and they accumulate points based on finishes.
In A Division, the pairing of
Spencer Cartwright (Nassau, Bahamas) and
Molly Matthews (Grosse Ile, Mich.), in addition to
Aidan Hoogland (Chula Vista, Calif.) who rotated in for two races, sailed arguably their worst regatta of the year. They only managed a single top-three finish out of the 16 races sailed, while also posting nine double-digit finishes. They put themselves behind by finishing 17
th and 14
th to open action on the bayou, and while they put together a strong stretch to dig themselves out of the hole, they never got higher than a tie for 11
th and wound-up finishing 14
th in the division with a score of 183.
Cameron Wood (Corona del Mar, Calif.) and
Emily Gildea (Palos Park, Ill.) performed better in B Division as they sailed from wire-to-wire for RWU. They started out strong taking the top spot in the opening race of the regatta in their division, and it was their first of five top-three finishes. However, they ultimately saw their score dragged down by five double-digit finishes, another four placings in ninth, and a disqualification in one race. This ultimately saw them take tenth in the 18-team field with a score of 144
