SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Roger Williams University wrestling team took part in the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Dual Championships on Sunday, finishing seventh in the 16-team field. The Hawks defeated WPI, 27-18, and Southern Maine 28-17, but lost to Springfield, 34-11, and Trinity, 21-17.
Coming into the tournament as the No. 5 seed in the tournaments, the Hawks opened the day against No. 12 WPI. The Engineers picked up the early 3-0 lead after Tanner Thatcher picked up the win at 125-pounds.
Christopher Tringali (Chester, N.J.) then responded with an 8-4 decision victory and was followed by decision wins by
Tyler Williams and
Peter Tringali (Chester, N.J.).
After dropping the next three matches, two by pin, the Hawks trailed by nine with three matches remaining.
Cole Shaughnessy (Fairfield, Conn.) then pinned his opponent at 184-pojnds in 45 seconds, and the Hawks earned another six points from Fetrow, who pinned his opponent in 33 seconds at 197-pounds. Leading by three heading into the final match,
Addison Boisvert (Scarborough, Maine) closed out the dual, with a third straight pin for Roger Williams, closing the match with the 27-18 final.
Against Springfield, the Pride jumped out to a 19-0 lead with a pair of pins at 133 and 141 pounds before Chase Parrott picked up a major decision victory. Another three wins, two by pins, put the Pride 34-0, but Shaughnessy finally broke through for a 5-4 decision at 184 pounds, before Fetrow picked up a tech fall victory at 197-pounds,
William Ogbebor (Foxborough, Mass.) then took a 3-1 decision at 285-pounds to close out the match.
In their third match of the day against Trinity, Roger Williams got five points in the opening match with
Ari Dinerman (Ashland, Mass.) picking up a tech fall victory 21-6 over his opponent at 125 pounds, before Chris Tringali picked up a decision victory over Matthew Carrozza at 133-pounds.
Holding a 11-0 lead after the opening three matches, the Bantams scored three decision victories followed by a pin at 174-pounds, taking a 15-11 lead. Shaughnessy responded with a pin of his own, before Anders Klass picked up a victory for Trinity.
In the final match Timothy Glynn edged out a 13-7 decision to take the match for Trinity, 21-17.
In the seventh-place match against Southern Maine, the Hawks took a 6-0 lead before Southern Maine cut the lead in half with a win at 133-pounds. Williams then added a tech fall victory to take a 11-3 lead. Caden Frost then earned three points for the Huskies after taking an 8-6 decision win at 149-pounds.
Colby Frost added five more points for the Huskies, before Cardozo pinned his 165-pound opponent. Shaughnessy and Fetrow earned points off a tech fall and pin respectively to close out scoring for Roger Williams.
Roger Williams is now 16-4 on the season in duals. The Hawks will return to competition on Saturday Jan. 28 at 11 am against Plymouth State and Bridgewater State in a double dual meet. The Hawks will also be celebrating Senior Day.
