WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The Roger Williams University wrestling team opened their season on Saturday at the Ned McGinley Invitational, hosted by Kings College, with strong performances.
At 184-pounds,
Cole Shaughnessy (Fairfield, Conn.) posted a 4-1 record on the day, earning a spot in the Championship Match. Starting with a 4-3 decision victory over Brendan Newbury of Stevens, Shaughnessy then followed with a technical fall victory in his second match of the day. Earning another win by major decision in the third round, Shaughnessy then posted a pinfall victory in 4:18 over his semifinal opponent. Reaching the finals, Shaughnessy fell 6-5 in a tightly contested match to Joel Martsinovsky.
Wrestling at 165-pounds,
Matt Lucas (Danbury, Conn.) then posted a 5-1 record to earn a spot in the consolation finals. Lucas earned an early decision victory to start the day, before a pinfall victory in 38 seconds. Lucas then fell in the third match of the day with a 6-0 loss by decision. In the consolation bracket, Lucas then earned a technical fall win, 16-1, and a 13-11 decision win before rounding out the day with an 8-6 win to earn a spot in the consolation finals.
Anthony Ostrander (Newbury, Mass.) finished sixth at the 165-pound weight class, with
Ben Bariso (Butler, N.J.) had a similar result at 157-pounds.
Spencer Fetrow (Holliston, Mass.) at 197-pounds, and
Jayden Curley (Mansfield, Mass.) also finished sixth in their respective weight classes.
Roger Williams will be in action next on Saturday, Nov. 11 at 9:30 am when they host the RWU Invitational. The Hawks will then be at the David Butler Duals on Saturday, Nov. 18 at the University of New Hampshire.
