NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Roger Williams University sailing team competed in high-profile regattas over the weekend, competing at the NEISA Match Race Championship, the Women's ACC Finals, the Captain Hurst Bowl, Nevins Trophy, and Savin Hill Invite.
At the match racing championship hosted by Coast Guard, the Hawks finished sixth at the regatta. After landing as the sixth seed, going 4-4 in a seeding round-robin, the Hawks fell to Boston College in the quarterfinals. The Hawks' combination of
Carlos Bermudez de Castro (La Coruña, Spain),
Drew Mastovsky (Marion, Mass.),
Kyle Pfrang (Suffolk, Va.), and
Addyson Fisher (Charleston, S.C.) took matchups over Bowdoin, Coast Guard, Mass Maritime and Tufts in round robin action.
In the quarterfinals, Boston College took the first race, before the Hawks responded with a win of their own in race two. In the deciding third race, BC took the edge clinching a spot in the semifinals.
At the Women's ACC Finals, The Hawks placed 14
th in the field. The Hawks combined for 345 points in the 18-team regatta, as Stanford earned the top spot with 151 points. Roger Williams compiled 154 points in Division A, with
Lucy Meagher (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and
Maren Matthews (Harbor Springs, Mich.) finishing 10
th in the division. In division B,
Tavia Smith (Wilmington, N.C.),
Katie McGagh (League City, Texas), and
Elyssa Franklin (St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands) sailed to a 16
th-place finish with 191 points.
In the Captain Hurst Bowl, the Hawks finished in seventh, after tallying 194 points total. In division A,
Mathieu Dale (Christiansted, U.S. Virgin Islands) and
Claire Buckley (Bridgewater, Conn.) sailed to a fifth place finish, with 77 points. In division B, the Hawks turned to
Jack Roman (Newport Beach, Calif.) and
Carter Sheehan (Middletown, R.I.) with 117 points placed 10
th in the division, finishing a point behind Connecticut College.
At Kings Point, for the Nevins Trophy, the Hawks finished in the top half of the field, placing sixth, with 217 total points. In Division A, Roger Williams turned to
Oliver Stokke to skipper, with
Caroline Felser (Brick, N.J.) and
Ethan Martin (Mashpee, Mass.) acting as the crew. The team combined for 105 total points, finishing outside the top five. The Hawks then placed seventh in Division B, with
Tristan McDonald (Lake Forest, Ill.) and
Frankie Sparrow (Portland, Maine) collecting 112 points.
At the Savin Hill Invite, the Hawks had two boats finishing in fourth and 12
th.
Connor McHugh (Annandale, N.J.) and
Reid Nelson (Tampa, Fla.) sailed the top Roger Williams boat in Division A, finishing in sixth with 29 points.
Caylin Schnoor (San Diego, Calif.) and
Dawson Chambers-Tartaglino (Somers, Mont.) had 54 total points in the Hawks' second boat.
In Division B, the Hawks'
Jakub Fuja (Glenview, Ill.) and
Dominique Spinola (Dartmouth, Mass.) compiled 29 points in the top spot, while
Jancy Grayson (Falmouth, Mass.) and
Ruby Hope (Bellevue, Wash.) compiled 47 points finishing in 11
th.
Roger Williams will return to competition next weekend, while also hosting their Captains Cup on Saturday, Oct. 19.
