PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Roger Williams University sailing team had strong finishes at conference championship regattas, taking the top spot at the Open NEISA Championship and a program best fourth at the Women's Fall Championships.
In the Urn Trophy, the Hawks posted their program-best finish with 161 points, while Harvard earned the win with 124 points. In Division A,
Lucy Meagher (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and
Maren Matthews (Harbor Springs, Mich) placed fourth with 72 points, sitting three behind Brown who collected 69 points. The duo combined for four first-place finishes during the regatta, with seven top-five finishes. In Division B,
Tavia Smith (Wilmington, N.C.) and
Elyssa Franklin (St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands) sailed for 89 points, placing fifth in the division, edging out MIT by three points. The Hawks' Division B pairing earned a first-place finish, along with five other finishes in the top four throughout the 14 races, as they clinched their highest finish ever at the Urn Trophy.
The Schell Trophy, the NEISA Open Championship at Yale, the Hawks tallied 94 points, winning the regatta by 33 points on the season. For the Hawks'
Carlos Bermudez de Castro (La Coruña, Spain),
Carly Kiss (Pewaukee, Wis.), and
Jed Lory (Severna Park, Md.) combined to win Division A by 37 points over Yale. The Hawks Division A team picked up four race victories and fell outside of the top five one time in the squad's 13 races. In Division B, the Hawks again earned a victory, with
Kyle Pfrang (Suffolk, Va.),
Claire Buckley (Bridgewater, Conn.), and
Carter Sheehan (Middletown, R.I.) edging out Harvard by five points. The Team had two first-place finishes, along with a pair of second-place finishes, with two third-place finishes.
The Hawks strong performances continued to the Nickerson Trophy, with Brown taking the top spot, followed by the Hawks. Roger Williams earned 121 points, with Brown tallying 66 in their win. In Division A the first-year pairing of
Tristan McDonald (Lake Forest, Ill.) and
Ethan Martin (Mashpee, Mass.) had 53 points, finishing second in the division. The duo sailed to a top finish in their fifth race starting with top-five finishes in their opening six races. In Division B,
Connor McHugh (Annandale, N.J.) and
Caroline Felser (Brick, N.J.) placed fifth, falling to fifth and dropping the tiebreaker to Tufts. Two first-place finishes guided them to 68 points in the division.
Roger Williams will return to action in the spring, after posting a strong weekend outing.
