Men’s Golf: Roger Williams Charges Back to Retain Conference Title, Dacey Takes Home Individual Title

BRISTOL, R.I. – After ending the opening round of the Conference of New England (CNE) Championship sitting in third, the Roger Williams University men's golf team took home their second straight conference title, finishing in the top spot of the CNE Championship.
 
The Hawks took home their second straight conference title, with Ryan Dacey (East Greenwich, R.I.) earning the individual title after finishing second in the conference tournament last season.
 
The Hawks entered the day after shooting 304 (+24) on the opening round, sitting six strokes behind Gordon who held the lead with a 298 (+18) and Endicott 299 (+19). The Hawks shot a combined two-day total 598 (+38), edging out Endicott by a stroke for the tournament after shooting 294 (+14) for the second round.
 
Dacey continued his stellar start, shooting 70 (E) on the day. After paring the first six holes of the round, Dacey hit a bogey on the par three seventh but recovered the following hole with a birdie on eight. Heading into the back nine, Dacey opened with a birdie on the par five 10th hole, with an ensuing birdie on the 11st. After three straight pars Dacey hit a five on 15, going one over par for the round. A birdie on 17 brought Dacey back to even par, securing the individual title by three strokes, after entering tied for fifth on the day.
 
Josh Peterson (Goffstown, N.H.) finished tied for third after shooting 74 (+4) on day two to finish the tournament 10 over par. Peterson hit bogies on hole three and seven, but rebounded for a birdie on the eighth, going into the turn one over par. After bogeying 11 and 12, Peterson again rebounded with a birdie on 13, but bogeyed back-to-back holes on 15 and 16, before finishing with a pair of pars.
 
Will Lafrance (Westport, Mass.) also hit a 74 (+4) on the day, but hit four bogeys on the front nine, heading into the turn four over par. The second nine of the day, Lafrance proved resilient securing seven pars on the card, with a birdie on 13 and a bogey on 15. Cal Tryder (Wakefield, Mass.) rounded out the scorers for the Hawks carding a 76 (+6). After four bogeys, Tryder went into the turn carding a birdie on the par five ninth hole to take a 37 into the turn. Three bogeys on the back would land him six over.
 
Sammy Johnson (West Springfield, Mass.) shot eight over on the day to finish 160 (+20) for the tournament.
 
Roger Williams earned the CNE's automatic qualifying bid to the NCAA Championships on Tuesday, May 20 through Friday, May 23 at the Midvale Country Club in Penfield, N.Y.
