ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Roger Williams University sailing team placed third over the weekend at the Open Atlantic Coast Championship Round 1A, earning a spot in the Open ACC Finals, while also competing at the Stu Nelson Trophy and Sister Esther Trophy.
At the Open ACC Championship, the Hawks finished third out of 18 teams in the opening round hosted by Navy. The top nine teams earned a slot at the championship finals later in October. The Hawks compiled 245 total points over Division A and B while Brown took the top spot with 195 total points, followed by Boston College who finished second with 206.
In Division A, the Hawks turned to
Carlos Bermudez de Castro (La Coruña, Spain) and
Carly Kiss (Pewaukee, Wis.) who finished third in the division with 104 points, seven points behind Stanford who finished in first. Brown placed second with 100 total points. After finishing 10
th to start the regatta, the two finished in first three of the next four races. Roger Williams placed inside the top five in nine of their opening 11 races in Division A.
In Division B, the Hawks finished eighth overall with 141 points, while Boston College had 66 total points taking the top spot.
Kyle Pfrang (Suffolk, Va.) sailed with
Claire Buckley (Bridgewater, Conn.) for 16 races, before
Oliver Stokke (Santa Barbara, Calif.) sailed the final two in his place. After opening the division with a pair of second place finishes, the Hawks finished fifth before two more finishes inside the top five, compiling 17 points through the opening five races. After a 12th-place finish in race nine, the Hawks again rebounded for a fourth-place finish in race 10.
At the Sister Esther Trophy the Hawks placed second with 132 points, edging out Brown by four points, with Yale compiling 96 in first.
Jack Roman (Newport Beach, Calif.) and
Carter Sheehan (Middletown, R.I.) tallied 70 points, finishing in third in Division A, while
Edward Herman (Annapois, Md.) and
Ethan Snyder (Sea Cliff, N.Y.) had 62 points finishing third in Division B.
In their final regatta of the week, the Hawks finished fifth in the three division Stu Nelson Trophy. In Division A, the Hawks saw
Lucy Meagher (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and
Maren Matthews (Harbor Springs, Mich.) finish in fifth with 50 total points. Division B had
Tavia Smith (Wilmington, N.C.) and
Elyssa Franklin (St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands) compiling 67 points to finish sixth, the regatta rounded out with the Hawks also finishing sixth with
Katie McGagh (League City, Texas) and
Addyson Fisher (Charleston, S.C.) earning 67 points.
The Hawks will return to competition next weekend.
