BRISTOL, R.I. – Jayden Toppan and
Matt Lucas took the top spots in their brackets at 285 pounds and 165 pounds respectively, as the Roger Williams University Wrestling team closed out the semester, hosting the Scott Viera Open.
In the heavyweight bracket, Toppan earned a win by fall in the opening match, pinning Jonathan Eylander of Western New England in 2:32. He followed with a 15-1 victory by major decision against Bridgewater State's Mathew Piper, before edging out Vermont State University – Castleton's Keonta Crawford 5-2. Toppan secured the win in the championship with a pin in 2:20 over Maine Maritime's Nathan Willoughby.
Lucas scored 5-0 on the day, picking up wins in each match. After taking his opening bout, 6-2 by decision, Lucas won via tech fall over Hunter Logan. The Hawks' 165-pound wrestler then edged out a 2-0 win before earning his second tech fall victory of the day in the semifinals. Lucas then earned a 4-1 win over Vandavian Way.
Shaun McLaughlin battled through the bracket, opening his day with an 18-3 win via tech fall, ahead of a 20-9 second down win over Kyle Gidman of Springfield. McLaughlin earned a 10-7 win in his third match before falling 14-2 in his fourth match. He rebounded on his way to finish third.
Tyrell Newmann and
Gordon Murray each finished fourth place in their respective brackets, with Newmann going 5-1 in his competed matches, tallying three wins by major decision. Murray earned his finish at 157 pounds, with a 3-2 day. Murray earned his opening win by pin, before winning by major decision in the second round. Murray then fell in the third round, but rebounded to earn a spot in the third place match, with a tech fall victory, before eventually falling 5-1 in the third place match.
Roger Williams (5-3, 1-2 NEWA) will return to competition following the New Year on Saturday, Jan. 4 when they host King's and New England College for duals.
