SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Roger Williams University wrestling team finished ninth as a team at the Futures Tournament on Sunday at Western New England University.
Anthony Ostrander (Newbury, Mass.) placed third overall at 165 pounds, going 4-1 over the course of his five matches. Ostrander picked up an opening round 9-3 win by decision, before following up with a pinfall victory over Jake Long of Castleton in round two. In the quarterfinals, Ostrander again advanced with a 5-0 victory. In the 165-pound semifinals, Ostrander was edged out, falling just short of a comeback earning four points in the third period. Ostrander closed out his day with a 13-3 major decision victory, placing third.
Jack Forte also had a strong showing at 165 pounds, with a fifth-place finish in the field. Forte dropped his opening match, before rebounding for a win in his next match by major decision, 14-3. In his next match Forte pulled out a technical fall victory, before earning back-to-back wins by decision, rounding out the day.
At 133-pounds,
Shaun McLaughlin (Natick, Mass.) also placed fifth, opening with a pinfall win over Vinny Keeler of Southern Main in 1:54. In his second match, McLaughlin earned a major decision win, 16-2, and followed with a pinfall win in 2:15. McLaughlin defeated Noah Kim in his second to last match winning 13-3 by major decision before falling in his last match of the day, 7-4.
Roger Williams will be back in action on Saturday, Mar. 2 at WPI for the Northeast Regional Championships, concluding on Mar. 3.
