PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Roger Williams University sailing team competed in four regattas over the weekend, with the NEISA Open and Women's Singlehanded Championships, taking place at Brown.
In the Women's Singlehanded Championships,
Tavia Smith (Wilmington, N.C.) finished in 12
th in the field, earning 80 points, edging out Boston College's Madeline Torrey via a head-to-head tiebreaker. Smith sailed seven races for the Hawks, finishing seventh in race six.
Five Hawks competed for the Open Singlehanded crown in the Monotype Trophy, with
Norman Cartwright (Nassau, Bahamas) finishing 10
th, the highest by a Roger Williams sailor. Cartwright earned 92 points, sitting four points behind eighth and ninth-place finishes. In a 34-sailor field, Cartwright picked up a third-place finish in his fifth race of the weekend, while also earning a sixth-place finish in race two.
Connor McHugh (Annadale, N.J.) also earned a top-15 finish, totaling 107 points, edging out Tor Svendsen of Boston College. McHugh had two seventh-place finishes on the weekend, earning four total finishes in the top 15.
Mathieu Dale (Christiansted, U.S. Virgin Islands) also sailed in the Monotype Trophy, finishing in 21
st with 133 points, earning a second-place finish in his sixth race.
Tristan McDonald (Lake Forest, Ill.) and
Kyle Pfrang (Suffolk, Va.) placed 26
th and 27
th respectively.
At the Hatch Brown Trophy, The Hawks finished second behind Yale, finishing 18 points ahead of Harvard who placed third with 189 points. In the three-division regatta,
Carlos Bermudez de Castro (La Coruña, Spain) and
Carly Kiss (Pewaukee, Wis.) combined for the top spot in Division A with 36 points, finishing 18 ahead of Yale's duo of Stephan Baker and Ashley Highland. Bermudez de Castro and Kiss picked up three race victories, with a top-three finish in three races and only finishing outside the top five twice.
Oliver Stokke (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and
Addyson Fisher (Charleston, S.C.) compiled 71 points in Division B, placing fourth in the field. Boston College's Peter Busch and Emily Marlas took the top spot in Division B, with Yale and Harvard placing second and third. In Division C,
Drew Mastovsky (Marion, Mass.) and
Ruby Hope (Bellevue, Wash.) earned 64 points, finishing fourth, behind the Ivy League trio of Yale, Brown, and Harvard. After opening with a win in their first race, the pair combined for four out more top three finishes over their final nine races.
The final regatta of the weekend, the Regis Trophy, hosted by Boston University, saw the Hawks place 12
th in the 18-team, two-division regatta.
Katie McGagh (League City, Texas) and
Elyssa Franklin (St Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands) totaled 126 points in Division A. The duo combined for two top 10 finishes, earning an eighth and ninth in their third and fourth race of the weekend. In Division B,
Caylin Schnoor (San Diego, Calif.) and
Dawson Chambers-Tartaglino (Somers, Mont.) finished ninth with 88 points, collected through their 10 races. The two combined for a win in race seven, before capping out the regatta with a fifth-place finish in their final race of the weekend.
Roger Williams will take part in the NEISA Match Race Championships next weekend, while also set to schedule at the Danmark Trophy, Hood Trophy, Salt Pond Invite, and Eagle Invite.
