BRISTOL, R.I. - In a commanding performance on a rain-soaked Saturday afternoon, Roger Williams University men's rugby team cruised to a 54-5 victory over Stonehill College. Despite challenging field conditions from the heavy rain, the Hawks showcased their strength, skill, and resilience throughout the match.
Jake Carney (West Hartford, Conn.) led the charge contributing 19 points to the team's total, playing a pivotal role in both offensive and defensive efforts.
Samuel Sirois (Amherst, Mass.) was named Man of the Match for his exceptional performance, leading the forward pack with physicality and work at the breakdown, while also providing key leadership on the field. Sirios' ability to adapt to the wet and muddy conditions stood out as he consistently led the Hawks' forward momentum.
Dominic Montessi (Madison, Conn.) made a significant impact with two well-executed tries, adding to the Hawks' commanding lead and further demoralizing the Stonehill defense. Montessi's quick pace and ability to cut through the opposition lines were instrumental in securing the win.
The playing field and the ball were slick and the soaked pitch made handling and footing difficult. However, Roger Williams' disciplined approach allowed them to dominate possession and territory, neutralizing Stonehill's offense and controlling the match from start to finish.
Roger Williams (1-0) will face off against Endicott on Sunday, Sept. 29 at 3:00 pm. The Hawks will then face Bryant on Friday, Oct. 4 at 7:00 pm under the lights of Bayside Field.
