Men’s Rugby: Hawks Retain Mount Hope Cup with Win Over Salve Regina

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Men's Rugby team defeated Salve Regina, 35-5, on Saturday morning to retain the Mount Hope Cup and remain undefeated on the season.

The match saw Jake Carney (West Hartford, Conn.) and Timmy Carlson (Hanover, Mass.) lead the squad with 10 points each, while Will Head (Holden, Mass.), Dylan Palombo (Riverside, R.I.), and Ben Fahy (Mansfield, Mass.) each recorded five points. Carlson had two tries in the match. Carney had two conversions and a pair of penalties.

The Hawks struck first in the 22nd minute with Carlson able to touch down for the try. Carney then converted to put RWU up 7-0. Around 11 minutes later, the Hawks saw Carlson tally his second try of the game as he put RWU up 12-0, ahead of a try by Salve in the 37th minute.

After the try by the Seahawks, it was all, RWU as Palombo converted for the Hawks in the 43rd minute, ahead of a penalty by Carney in the 55th minute, that put RWU up 20-5. Fahy then added a try four minutes later, to take a 20-point lead, while Carney then added five points with another conversion and penalty in the 72nd minute.

The Hawks wrapped up the contest with Head finishing the match with a try in the 75th minute to wrap up the win. Away from the scoresheet, Adams Becerra added physicality and control for the Hawks, while captain Lucas Sanborn-Burch was dynamic in open field play, creating opportunities for the Hawks' attack.

"This was a full team performance," said Head Coach Christian Palombo. "We had contributions across the pitch, and our discipline on both sides of the ball was the difference."

Salve Regina (0-1) will face Stonehill on Saturday, Oct. 4, ahead of a Saturday, Oct. 11 match at Springfield.

Roger Williams (2-0, 2-0 NACR) will face Endicott in Beverly on Sunday, Oct. 5, at 11:00 am. The Hawks will then host matches on Saturday, Oct. 11, and Saturday, Oct. 18, against Trinity and Springfield, respectively.
