BRISTOL, R.I. - Roger Williams University Men's Rugby delivered one of their most complete offensive performances of the season on Saturday night, defeating Trinity College, 36-27 in front of a home crowd on Bayside Field.
The Hawks' attack came alive early, Liam O'Driscoll (Braintree, Mass.) setting the tone by scoring his first of three tries just five minutes into the match. Trinity responded with two quick tries of their own to take the lead, but O'Driscoll's second score and a string of well-executed phases helped RWU regain control. Jake Carney's (West Hartford, Conn.) reliable boot added crucial conversions, and his own try in the 29th minute pushed the Hawks ahead 19-15.
O'Driscoll completed his hat trick before halftime, giving RWU a comfortable 26-15 advantage heading into the break. Trinity showed great grit in the second half, using their physical forward pack to keep the pressure on. However, the Hawks' balanced attack proved too much. Ben Fahy (Mansfield, Mass.) powered across the line midway through the half, and Carney capped his outstanding night with a penalty kick to seal the win.
Carney led all scorers with 16 points on a try, four conversions, and a penalty, while O'Driscoll tallied 15 from his three tries. Fahy added five poijnts to round out the scoring.Â
Roger Williams (3-1) will host Springfield on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 3:00 pm for Homecoming and Family Weekend.
