BEVERLY, Mass. - The Roger Williams University Men's Rugby put up a strong fight on Sunday against Endicott College, ultimately falling, 47-26, in a tough road match that slipped away in the closing minutes of the first half.
The Hawks started strong, answering an early Endicott try with one of their own from Dylan Palombo (Riverside, R.I.) in the 10th minute, followed by a successful conversion from Jake Carney (West Hartford, Conn.) to even the score at 7-7. Momentum began to shift late in the first half, however, as Endicott capitalized on several RWU miscues to score three tries in the final eight minutes before halftime, taking a commanding 26-7 lead.
Despite the setback, Roger Williams showed resilience after the break. Timmy Carlson (Hanover, Mass.) and Liam O'Driscoll (Braintree, Mass.) each crossed the line for second-half tries, with Carney adding two more conversions to bring the Hawks within striking distance at 26-33. Palombo added a second try in the 68th minute..
Unfortunately, missed opportunities in the kicking game and lapses in defensive structure along the perimeter allowed Endicott to extend their lead late, putting the game out of reach.
Palombo led RWU in scoring with 10 points, followed by Carney with six, Carlson with five, and O'Driscoll with five.
Roger Williams (2-1) will host Trinity on Saturday, Oct. 11 at 7:00 pm.
