PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Roger Williams University sailing team took the top spot at the Sherman Hoyt Trophy, hosted by Brown over the weekend, while also finishing second at the Salt Pond Invite and Eagle Invite.
At Brown, the Hawks finished atop the standings in the regatta compiling 128 points over the two divisions, with division A's group of
Carlos Bermudez de Castro (La Coruña, Spain),
Jed Lory (Severna Park, Md.) and
Carly Kiss (Pewaukee, Wis.) finishing third with 77 points in their Division A. The group picked up three first place finishes on Saturday, winning their second, third, and fifth race, ending the day with 45 points. The Hawks added 32 points on Sunday.
In Division B, the Hawks turned to skipper
Kyle Pfrang (Suffolk, Va.) and crews
Reid Nelson (Tampa, Fla.) and
Claire Buckley (Bridgewater, Conn.) earned 51 points, finishing atop Division B, 17 points ahead of Brown. After finishing in fifth to open the regatta on Saturday, the Hawks then won three of the next five races, finishing the day in with 31 points after eight races. The Hawks then posted six top-five finishes on Sunday to seal the regatta with a comfortable first-place finish.
At the Salt Pond Invite hosted by URI, the Hawks finished second with a combined 44 points, while the Rams earned 28 to finish first.
Jakub Fuja (Glenview, Ill.) partnered with
Edward Herman (Annapois, Md.) and
Ethan Martin (Mashpee, Mass.) to finish with 27 points in Division A, knotted up with Mass Maritime who earned second in the division, with the tiebreaker. The Hawks Division A boat, finished second in their fourth race while earning the top spot in race six.
Jack Crager and
Frankie Sparrow (Portland, Maine) combined for 17 points in Division B, three points shy of first place. Crager and Sparrow opened the Division in first, taking the top spot in the first two races. The duo then earned another top finish in the fourth race of the regatta, before rounding out the day event with a pair of fourth-place finishes, and another finish inside the top three.
The Hawks also earned a second-place finish at the Eagle Invite hosted by Boston College, with 108 points, finishing 21 points behind the hosts in the three-division regatta. Roger Williams' Division B boat of
Connor McHugh (Annandale, N.J.) and
Caroline Felser (Brick, N.J.) earned 13 points. The Hawks Division C team of
Katie McGagh (League City, Texas) and
Peter Cotoia (South Yarmouth, Mass.) earned 42 points, while
Tavia Smith (Wilmington, N.C.) and
Elyssa Franklin (St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands) earned 53 points in Division A.
At the Hood Trophy hosted by Tufts, the Hawks top boat finished in fourth with 195 points, edging out Brown by three points overall. Roger Williams also had an eighth and 11
th place finish.
Mathieu Dale (Cjrostoamsted, U.S. Virgin Islands) and
Addyson Fisher (Charleston, S.C.) earned 125 points for the Hawks' first boat, while
Jack Roman (Newport Beach, Calif.) and
Carter Sheehan (Middletown, R.I.) sailed to the top RWU finish in Division A with 104 points.
In Division B,
Oliver Stokke (Santa Barbara, Calif.),
Ethan Snyder (Sea Cliff, N.Y.), and Felser sailed the first RWU boat to 70 points, finishing six points behind Harvard, while
Drew Mastovsky (Marion, Mass.) and
Maren Matthews (Harbor Springs, Mich.) earned 108 points finishing ninth in the division.
Roger Williams will return to competition on Saturday, Sept. 28.
