Sailing: Hawks Place Sixth at Women’s ACC Round 1B

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Roger Williams University sailing team finished sixth at the Women's ACC's Round 1B qualifier at the Edgewood Yacht Club over the weekend. The Hawks also sailed at the Moody Trophy, Danmark Trophy, George Warren Smith Trophy, and the BU Invitational.

At the qualifier, the Hawks totaled 139 points through both divisions of the regatta, while Cornell, Navy, and Tulane took the top three spots. In division A, Lucy Meagher (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and Maren Matthews (Harbor Springs, Mich.) combined for 65 points, placing fifth. After finishing their first three races outside the top 10, the duo steadied, finishing sixth in their fourth race. A pair of first-place finishes in races five and six would tally the pair with 46 points. The Hawks finished third, before ninth and sixth place finishes in the eighth and ninth race, set up a first-place finish in their final regatta race.

In division B, Tavia Smith (Wilmington, N.C.) and Elyssa Franklin (St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands) combined for 74 points, tying them for seventh, but would lose the tiebreaker to Hobart and Williams Smith. The two opened the race with a sixth-place finish and then followed with two finishes outside the top 10. The Hawks then earned a third-place finish in race four, before finishing ninth in race five. A pair of second-place finishes then was followed by a sixth-, eighth, and ninth-place finish.

The Hawks finished second at the Moody Trophy hosted by the University of Rhode Island. Brown took the top spot, edging out the Hawks by six points. In division A, Roger Williams finished fourth with 66 points, while Brown and Stanford each registered 60 points each. Oliver Stokke (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Caroline Felser (Brick, N.J.) had two first-place finishes over their 11 races, while also placing inside the top five four times.

In division B, the Hawks finished second with 47 points, edging out Brown in a tiebreaker. Drew Mastovsky (Marion, Mass.) and Ruby Hope (Bellevue, Wash.) combined for two first-place finishes on the regatta, while finishing in the top three eight times.

At the Danmark Trophy, the Hawks placed sixth with 143 points, over the two divisions, with the division A pairing of Carlos Bermudez de Castro (La Coruña, Spain) and Carly Kiss (Pewaukee, Wis.) finishing third with 52 points. The two opened the regatta with a first-place finish, while earning two second-place finishes. In division B, Kyle Pfrang (Suffolk, Va.) and Claire Buckley (Bridgewater, Conn.) earned 91 points, with two top 10 finishes for the regatta.

Roger Williams boats finished fifth and sixth at the George Warren Smith Trophy. The Hawks top top-finishing boat compiled 121 points, while their second-place boat finished with 126. Connor McHugh (Annandale, N.J.) and Dawson Chambers-Tartaglino (Somers, Mont.) earned 68 points, while Jed Lory (Severna Park, Md.) and Reid Nelson (Tampa, Fla.) finished seventh in the division with 80 points.

In division B, Parker Herman (Annapois, Md.) and Carter Sheehan (Middletown, R.I.) won the division, earning 41 points with three first place finishes. Tristan McDonald (Lake Forest, Ill.) and Frankie Sparrow (Portland, Maine) finished sixth, after being tied with Boston College with 58 points.

The Hawks also competed at the BU Invite, finishing fourth and ninth in their divisions.

Roger Williams will return to competition next weekend.
