Wrestling: Five Hawks Named in NEWA Individual Rankings

BRISTOL, R.I. – The New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) has announced its second rendition of the team Tournament and individual rankings. Placing Roger Williams University 12th as a team, and naming five Hawks in the updated Rankings.

Jayden Toppan (Gloucester, Mass.) moved up to 285 pounds, jumping three spots from eighth to fifth after appearing in the first rankings. Toppan has gone 6-4 through the early portion of the season, after opening with a 0-2 record at the Ned McGinley Invitational. Toppan rebounded for three straight wins, two by tech fall to finish 3-2. The Hawks' heavyweight then opened the RWU Invitational with a win, on his way to a 6-4 finish, earning one win by fall.

Staying at eighth at 165 pounds is Gordon Murray (Porter Corners, N.Y.) who tallied a 3-5 record through the early part of the season, earning a pair of wins by fall and one by major decision. Murray's record does not have a loss by fall but has one defeat by tech fall and another by sudden victory.

Tyrell Newmann (Cranston, R.I.) broke into the rankings, with a 10-4 record through the early portion of the season, including a 5-1 record at the RWU Invitational. Newmann's wins are compiled by two by fall, and a win by tech fall in 2:30. The Hawks' 174-pounder also has six wins by decision.

Josh Nieroda (West Suffield, Conn.) also broke into the updated rankings, sitting eighth at 184 pounds after starting the season at 6-3. After a 2-2 showing at the McGinley Invite, the Nieroda rebounded with a 3-1 record at the RWU Invite, adding another two wins by fall, tallying four on the season.

Rounding out the Hawks' NEWA honorees was first-year Spencer Buscema (Salem, N.H.), who has posted a 6-5 record at 125 pounds. Buscema has earned five pins to start the year, with his other win coming via decision.

Roger Williams (1-1) will look to pick up three more dual victories on Saturday, Nov. 22 at WPI when they take on Norwich, Emmanuel, and St. John Fisher.
