SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Roger Williams University Wrestling team competed on Sunday at the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Futures Tournament hosted by Western New England. The Hawks tallied 57.5 points in the event, finishing sixth in the 16 team field.
At 157 pounds,
Jack Forte went on to finish fourth in the field, winning three of his five matches on the day. Forte earned three victories by tech fall before falling in the semifinals and third place match.
Wrestling at 174 pounds,
Joshua Nieroda earned an opening win by tech fall, but fell by pin in his second match. Nieroda then rebounded with three straight wins via pin, to round out the day with a 4-1 record.
Michael Toppan also placed on the day, finishing sixth with a 3-2 record in his bouts. Toppan fell in his opening match by major decision, but rebounded in his next bout with a win by fall. Toppan also earned a win in his following two matches by decision, before falling in a tightly contested 12-8 match to round out his day.
After returning from injury earlier this season,
Anthony Ostrander posted a 3-2 record on the day with all three of his wins coming by fall.
Roger Williams (16-8, 8-8 NEWA) will be back in action at the Northeast Regional Championships on Saturday, Mar. 1 and Sunday, Mar. 2 in Middletown, Conn. as they look to send members of the squad to the NCAA Division III National Championships on Friday, Mar. 14 and Saturday, Mar. 15.
