MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Roger Williams University Wrestling team has two competitors unbeaten, heading into the second day of competition at the NCAA Regional Championships hosted by Wesleyan on Saturday.
Matt Lucas posted a 2-0 record at 157 pounds, defeating Jack Janes of Bridgewater State by tech fall in 3:30, before winning his quarterfinal bout over Jacob Woodburn of Coast Guard by decision 3-2.
At 197 pounds,
Spencer Fetrow also remains unbeated winning his opening match by tech fall, 16-1, in 5:05 before picking up a 9-3 decision by Kenneth Marra of Coast Guard.
Jayden Curley finished his day 2-1 as he tries to qualify for nationals in the second straight season, winning his opening match by forfeit, before falling in his quarterfinal bout. In his consolation round match, Curley picked up a 14-1 major decision win to stay in the bracket.
At 184 pounds,
Michael Forte sits with a 2-1 record, after opening with a win, he fell in a tightly contested, 5-4, bout to Jamie Evarts of Williams. Forte then rebounded for an 8-6 win over Nicholas Crotty of Trinity.
Christopher Tringali also scored a 2-1 record on the day. After falling in sudden victory to Chris Hong of Wesleyan, Tringali rebounded with a 7-3 win by decision over WNE's Beniamino DiCocco, and a 10-4 win by decision over Springfield's Jack Callahan.
Battling his way out of the preliminary bracket,
Shaun McLaughlin went 3-1, winning his opening match via fall over Noah Krysztofiak of Southern Maine. McLaughlin dropped his opening match in the main bracket, but came out with a pair of wins to remain in competition heading into day two.
Roger Williams will close out competition on Sunday at NCAA Regionals.
