WARWICK, R.I. (AP) — Roger Williams University men's golf team claimed the top spot at the Rhode Island College Spring Invitational on Thursday, edging out Springfield College by 10 strokes at Valley Country Club.
The Hawks posted a two-day team total of 617 (+41), shooting 310 in the opening round and following up with a 307 to seal the victory. It marked a strong showing for the squad as they outpaced a field of nine programs.
Leading the way for Roger Williams was Will Lafrance, who tied for individual medalist honors with a score of 149 (+5). Lafrance carded rounds of 75 and 74, sharing the top spot with Rhode Island College's Jasper Bruins Slot.
Three Hawks finished in the top 10, including Sammy Johnson (T-4th, 153) and Ryan Dacey (T-6th, 154). Josh Peterson tied for 19th with a 161, while Joel Collins rounded out the scoring for RWU with a 172.
Springfield finished second with a 627 (+51), and Wesleyan University placed third at 636 (+60).
Roger Williams will return to competition on Monday, Apr. 21 at Eastern Connecticut State in their final tune-up for the NCAA National Championships in in May.
