ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The Roger Williams University Women's Fleet Racing Sailing team finished the Women's Fleet Racing National Championship 15
th on Friday afternoon, as the regatta was hosted by St. Mary's (Md.).
The Hawks compiled 371 points through the two day regatta, Stanford was named the National Champion with 198 points, while Tulane and Harvard rounded out the top three with 209 and 223 points respectively.
In Division A, the Hawks turned to
Lucy Meagher and
Maren Matthews who sailed all 16 races for the Hawks in the division. The duo finished tied with Cornell with 134 points, but took fifth place on the tiebreaker. Stanford took the top spot with 68 total points.
After opening the division with 16 points following a ninth and seventh-place finish, the Hawks then saw three straight finishes, 12, 13, and 17 after five races, compiling 58 total points. The Hawks then saw seven straight races inside the top half of the field, capped off by a second-place finish in race 12.
RWU finished last in race 13 but nicely recovered with a pair of second place finishes before wrapping their regatta with a 14
th place finish in race 16.
Division B saw skippers
Tavia Smith and
Elyssa Franklin pair with crews
Katy McGagh,
Jancy Grayson, and
Lexi Chigas to earn 237 points total. The Hawks finished in 14
th and 16
th, before a 17
th place finish in race three saw them fall to the bottom of the leaderboard in Division B, and they would never regain a spot. In race 15, Smith and Grayson finished ninth, placing their top finish for the regatta.
This concludes the Women's Fleet Racing season. The Hawks earned their second straight National Championship berth, while securing the top national semifinal finish in program history.
