WORCESTER, Mass. – The Roger Williams University men's tennis team dropped a narrow 4-3 decision to Clark University in its season opener Saturday afternoon at the Corash Tennis Courts.
The Hawks (0-1) captured the doubles point to take an early lead. Tucker Taylor and Iker Rodriguez Alcocer (Naucalpan de Juarez, Mexico) pushed Clark's Benjamin Liu and Sai Chanda before falling 7-5 at number three, but Roger Williams answered with wins at the top two spots. Bronson DeSisto (Las Vegas, Nev.) and senior Ryan Carroll (Holden, Mass.) edged Graham Russo and Edward Shepherd-Johnson 7-6 (9-7) at number one, while juniors Will Hurlbut (Marion, Mass.) and Camden Poitras won 6-2 at number two.
In singles, Clark (2-0) came back with four victories to secure the dual. DeSisto split sets at number one before falling 7-5, 2-6, 10-8, while Carroll evened the match with a 2-6, 6-2, 10-6 win at number two. At number three, Taylor dropped a 6-2, 6-3 decision, and Hurlbut was topped 6-2, 6-0 at number five. Russo clinched the match for the Cougars at number four, defeating Poitras 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).
Rodriguez Alcocer earned Roger Williams' final point with a 6-4, 6-4 victory at number six singles.
