BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Wrestling team came out victorious in both of their duals on Saturday afternoon in the Campus Rec Center Gymnasium, knocking off King's College, 36-5, ahead of a 45-7 victory over New England College.
After the Monarchs defeated the Pilgrims, 38-13, to open the day, the Hawks began their morning against King's. opening the match at 125 pounds,
Kenna Gioffre (Newtown, Conn.) defeated Patrick Horvath, 12-10 by decision, before Cole Anderson leveled the match for the Monarchs with a 14-8 victory.
With the match tied at 3-3,
Shaun McLaughlin (Natick, Mass.) secured six points with a pin over his opponent at 141 pounds, taking a 9-3 lead. King's responded with Shane Kibler securing three points with a 7-4 decision at 149 pounds. Roger Williams took another three points as
Tommy Iasello (White Plains, N.Y.) earned a 12-5 victory by decision, before
Matt Gish (Cromwell, Conn.) added three points with an overtime victory.
Leading 15-6,
Tyrell Newmann (Cranston, R.I.) added another three points with a 5-2 victory, before the Hawks secured the match with pins from 184, 197, and 285 pounds respectively with
Joshua Nieroda (West Suffield, Conn.),
Eric Power (Roslindale, Mass.) and
Jayden Toppan (Gloucester, Mass.) securing wins by fall.
The loss pushed King's to 4-6 in their duals on the season after their victory over NEC.
The Hawks then faced off against NEC, starting the match with an 18-0 lead after a pin by McLaughlin. The Hawks then saw
Matthew Castillo (Port Washington, N.Y.), Iasello, and Gish earn three straight victories by tech fall. After New England College's Joseph Bolduc, tallied the first three points of the dual for the Pilgrims at 174 pounds, before Nieroda and Power each earned six with pins at 184 and 197.
Brandon Lavasta was able to add four points in the final match for NEC, as he knocked off Toppan, 8-0.
NEC moved to 1-6 after dropping both duals on the day.
Roger Williams (7-3) will travel to Ursinus on Saturday, Jan. 10 at 10:00 am before taking part in the Trinity Duals on Saturday, Jan. 17 at 11:00 am against the Bantams and WPI.
