BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Men's Tennis team opened their season on Saturday, Feb. 14 at Emerson. After suffering a close 4-3 loss, the Hawks look to build on their 2-1 fall season.
The Hawks went 17-3 overall and 8-1 in the Conference of New England (CNE) last season. They held a historic 17 match win streak, until dropping to Colby-Sawyer, 4-3, in the CNE Semifinals last year.
RWU is entering its 13th season under Head Coach Barry Gorman, who has compiled a 188-81 overall record on the men's side and sitting 70-14 in CNE play. Gorman is joined by Robert Cahoon and Alessia Cahoon '23.
The Hawks return five singles starters from last season, including Ryan Carroll (Holden, Mass.), Bronson DeSisto (Las Vegas, Nev.), Camden Poitras (Londonderry, N.H.), Iker Rodriguez Alcocer (Nuacalpan de Juarex, Mexico), and Tucker Taylor (Gonzalez, Texas). Taylor posted a 15-2 overall singles record last season to lead the team with Carroll going 14-3 overall. DeSisto went 12-6 in singles last year, with Poitras going 10-7, and Alcocer going 9-5.
In doubles, Taylor and Alcocer led the team by going 12-3 overall last season. Poitras went 11-3 when paired with Will Hurlbut (Marion, Mass.), while Carroll and DeSisto went 8-4 on the season.
The Hawks will jump into conference play early, traveling to UNE on Saturday, Feb. 21 ahead of their spring break trip from March 8 until March 11. Roger Williams will return and travel to Suffolk on Tuesday, Mar. 17 before hosting their home opener against Nichols on Saturday, Mar. 21. RWU will head to Wentworth on Wednesday, Mar. 25 before opening a home stint for three matches against University of St. Joseph (Saturday, Mar. 28), Bridgewater State (Tuesday, Mar. 31) and Hartford (Tuesday, Mar. 31).
Roger Williams will continue conference play in April, going to Endicott on Saturday, Apr. 4. The Hawks will then return home to host WNE on Wednesday, Apr. 8 ahead of traveling to Colby-Sawyer on Saturday, Apr. 11. RWU will then host Gordon on Tuesday, Apr. 14 then travel to Curry on Saturday, Apr. 18.
The Conference of New England Tournament begins on Apr. 25, with the championship set for May 2.
