BRISTOL, R.I. – The New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) has announced its updated rankings for the fifth time this season, placing Roger Williams University tied for eighth in the Team tournament rankings, while all five individuals stayed in the rankings.
The Hawks are tied with Western New England in the team rankings, with Coast Guard leading the pack with 108 total points, sitting first. Springfield is second with 83 total points, followed by Vermont State University – Castleton, and Johnson & Wales in third and fourth, respectively.
Senior captain, Matthew Castillo (Port Washington, N.Y.) leads the way for Roger Williams sitting fourth at 149 pounds, while posting an 8-1 record thus far this season, with his lone loss coming against Trevor Bishop of St. John Fisher, who is ranked fifth in region II.
Jack Forte (Westbury, N.Y.) sits fifth in the rankings at 157 pounds, jumping out to a 19-3 season, while defeating Norwich's Gannon White (eighth) and Western New England's Matthew Rodriguez (sixth). Jayden Toppan (Gloucester, Mass.) fell one spot to sixth at 285 pounds in the updated rankings, sitting with an 18-9 record on the year.
Rounding out the rankings are Matt Gish (Cromwell, Conn.) and Joshua Nieroda (West Suffield, Mass.), who rank eighth at 165 and 184 pounds, respectively. Gish is off to a 22-10 record during his first-year campaign, while Nieroda sits at 18-9 on the season.
Roger Williams (13-5) will compete Friday, Feb. 6, at 6:00 pm at Rhode Island College before hosting Johnson & Wales the following week in the Campus Rec Center.
