BRISTOL, R.I. – Senior Cy Thompson (St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands) was named RWU Male Athlete of the Week after qualifying for the 2010 ICSA Singlehanded National Championship this past weekend on Long Island Sound.

Twelve of the top New England programs sent their top sailors to the New England Qualifying race hosted by Yale University Saturday and Sunday. Nine races were held each day with Thompson taking top three in 10, including four first-place finishes. His 66-point total ranked second behind a strong Yale competitor who won the event with 35 points and 11 first-place finishes.

The top four finishers qualify for the national championship in St. Petersburg, Fla., racing for the Glen S. Foster Trophy. Thompson qualified comfortably as the third and fourth-place finishers posted 76 and 103 points, respectively.

The RWU sailing team is back in action at the ACC’s Wednesday and Thursday.
