BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Sailing team took to the water again this past weekend at four regattas, with a victory at the Hood Trophy, hosted by Tufts University, highlighting the Hawks' showing.
Riding the breezes on the waters of Mystic Lake, the Hawks cruised to first place at the Hood Trophy, besting second-place Salve Regina University by a 112-144 margin. Leading the way for the Hawks was the B Division duo of Sean Bouchard (Warwick, Bermuda) and Kelly Stannard (Salem, Conn.), who sailed away with the division title with 45 points. The two sailors finished in the top three in six out of the ten races, earning four wins in the process. In A Division, Cy Thompson (St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands) and Adrienne White (Duxbury, Mass.) scored 67 points for the Hawks, placing runner-up in the division to the University of South Florida. In half of their ten races, Thompson and White placing in the top-six with three wins.
At the Southern Series Three hosted by the University of Rhode Island, RWU sent two teams to the regatta where the Hawks finish sixth and seventh. The combined division format of the regatta allowed the Hawks to come away with third place overall out of the nine teams. Eric Schwarm (Freeport, Maine) and Dan Goldman (Bradenton, Fla.) finished sixth overall of the 18 teams with Zack Shapiro (Darien, Conn.) and Megan Carlson (New Providence, N.J.) following in seventh. Schwarm and Goldman took three top-five finishes in the ten races, while Shapiro and Carlson pulled off three races in the top-four.
The Hawks also were on the water for the Central Series Three hosted by Boston University, where the team took seventh place out of the field of 17. Haley Powell (St. George, Bermuda) and John Bankert (Annapolis, Md.) paired up in A Division with top-ten finishes in 11 out of 12 races, good for fifth in the division. Emerald Epke (Tiverton, R.I.) and Alyssa Seifert (Duxbury, Mass.) earned seventh in B Division on the strength of eight races in the top-seven.
The fourth regatta sailed by the Hawks on the weekend took place at the New England Sloop Championships, where Jonathan Enright (Bristol, R.I.), Andrew Vachon (Scituate, Mass.), Joshua Saltmarsh (Wayland, Mass.), and Alec Anderson (Tortola, BVI) combined to finish sixth for RWU. The four sailors managed a win and a runner-up finish among their ten races, including top-five results in half of the races.
Roger Williams will head to the Danmark Trophy at Coast Guard, the Smith Trophy at MIT, the Central Series Four at Tufts, and the Ross Trophy in Boston for the upcoming weekend.
