BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Sailing team hit the water this past weekend at three separate regattas on the East Coast, finishing with good performances in each.
At the Thames River Team Race in Connecticut, the Hawks managed a tie for fifth place at the regatta in the eight-team field. RWU finished the double round-robin race with a 9-8 record, identical to that of Yale University. The Hawks got off to a very good start in the first round, going 5-2 in the first seven races with placed them in a three-way tie for second with the University of Rhode Island and Brown University. Yet RWU struggled in the second round robin races, going 2-5 and dropping out of the top-four. The Hawks wrapped up the regatta with a 2-1 record in their last three races, as URI earned the win after going 13-4 on the day.
At the Graham Hall Team Race hosted by Navy, the Hawks placed sixth out of 16 teams in the regatta. RWU began the event by compiling a 10-5 record against the field in the round-robin format. The ten wins tied the Hawks for fifth within the field, along with the University of South Florida and Boston College. As a result, RWU qualified for the “Gold” division, consisting of the top seven teams. In the Gold round robin, the Hawks went 3-4 in the races, placing them sixth, outside of contention for the win. Georgetown University claimed the overall win, after tallying an impressive 24-1 record.
The third regatta for Roger Williams came at the Sharpe Trophy, where the Hawks took fifth place in the six-team field and were represented by Bjarki Gunnarsson (River Vale, N.J.), Tyler Wilson (Woodville, Mass.), Joshua Saltmarsh (Wayland, Mass.), Alyssa Seifert (Duxbury, Mass.), Alec Anderson (Tortola, BVI), and Sophie Bellacosa (Winchester, Mass.). The regatta was formatted as three round-robins, where RWU finished tied for third with Brown University and Harvard University at 2-3 after the first round. The team fell behind significantly after the second round robin after being shutout with a 0-5 performance. The Hawks went 2-3 in the third round of the regatta, but still remained in last place with only four wins. In the head-to-head matchup against fifth-place MIT, RWU took two of the three races to finish in fifth overall.
Roger Williams will begin Spring Break this weekend with trips to three regattas in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Maryland.
